April 26, 2023 | Baseball
Tichy clubs two homers in Wednesday afternoon victory.
UMass improved to 8-25 overall, while Siena fell to 9-33 on the season.
Tichy and Hill led the Minutemen with three hits apiece, marking a career best for Hill, while MacLean added two. Both Carter Hanson and Justin Blumenthal registered one hit each. Kevin Skagerlind led the way in runs scored with three, followed by Tichy with two and five Minutemen with one. Tichy batted in a career high six RBI on a career-best two long balls and a single. Hill also had a career-high two doubles and two RBI.
Skagerlind led off the opening frame with a walk for UMass. Tichy crushed a two-run homer to right center field to get the Minutemen on the board early. Hanson singled down the right field line before Blumenthal hit a single of his own up the middle to claim bases. Hill drove in both Hanson and Blumenthal on his two-out double to right field, extending the team's lead to 4-0.
In the second, Skagerlind took his place on first with another walk, before stealing second. MacLean singled to first, advancing Skagerlind into scoring position. Tichy stepped up to the plate for his second at-bat, cranking a three-run long ball over the left field hedges to give UMass a 7-0 lead.
Skagerlind saw another four balls to take first base, before stealing another base in the fourth inning. Skagerlind moved to third after tagging up on MacLean's fly ball. Tichy, then, hit a single through the right side, allowing Skagerlind to touch the dish and make it an 8-0 lead for the Minutemen.
Siena pushed two runs across the plate on a home run in the top of the fifth, but Massachusetts took back the two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Hill walked and stole second, while Michael Toth walked, as well. Chris Pearsons hit a fly ball to center as Hill tagged up and went to third. Toth put himself in scoring position off a stolen base, before a sacrifice fly from Skagerlind helped Hill score and Toth advance to third. MacLean knocked in Toth on a single to left field, making it a 10-2 contest.
The Saints added another run in the sixth on a RBI double and in the ninth a two-run homer helped cut Siena's deficit in half. The Minutemen were able to stave off the Saints from earning any more runs, leaving a man on second and recording the final two outs to win 10-3.
On the mound, Scott LeSieur (1-0) received his first triumph of the season for Massachusetts, throwing for four innings, allowing no hits, no runs, two walks and getting a season-best three strikeouts. Richie Paltridge (1-2) gave up seven runs on six hits, walked two and had no strikeouts in two innings of work to take the loss for Siena.
