April 25, 2023 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey will welcome 6-2, 205-pound left-shot forward Aydar Suniev to its incoming class for 2023-24, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Tuesday. Suniev, a native of Kazan, Russia, was tabbed No. 40 among North American skaters in the final NHL Central Scouting rankings ahead of the 2023 NHL Draft.
Suniev has spent the past two seasons with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) where he has logged 123 points over 83 games on 59 goals and 64 assists and averaged 1.64 points per-game in regular season contests.
"Aydar is a highly skilled and talented scoring forward. He has good size and skating ability and should be taken in the higher rounds of this year's NHL Draft in June. Aydar earned First Team All-League Honors in the BCHL playing for Penticton this past year. He is also an excellent student who is receiving the highest level of academic merit that is possible at UMass. Aydar has the ability to be a game changing player on the ice and a great addition to our culture."
In addition to his First Team All-Star recognition, he led the BCHL in goals with 45 and was an all-rookie team honoree in 2022-23. In 2021-22, Suniev saw action in 17 regular season games and 10 playoff contests, putting up a total of 24 points in the Vees' BCHL championship run.
