Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball faces off against Atlantic 10 opponent Richmond for a three-game series on Friday, April 14 through Sunday, April 16 at Earl Lorden Field. The series kicks off with a 3 p.m. start on Friday, while Saturday's contest is slated for 1 p.m. The finale on Sunday will begin at 12 p.m. Friday and Sunday's games will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
UMass is 4-20 overall record after dropping the Second Round of the Baseball Beanpot to Northeastern on Tuesday and are 0-6 in the A-10. Richmond holds a 14-19 record on the season, including a 3-3 league record, falling 18-0 to Virginia on Tuesday.  
 
Recap in a Minute
UMass fell to Northeastern, 18-11, in the Second Round of the Baseball Beanpot on Tuesday at the Earl.
 
Four Minutemen went 2-for-4 on the day, including two doubles from Carter Hanson. Nolan Tichy, Hanson and Steve Luttazi had two runs apiece, while Tichy, Hanson and Michael Toth tallied two RBI each. Will MacLean and Toth also recorded doubles on the afternoon.
 
All-Time vs. Richmond
The Spiders lead the all-time series, 27-14, with the Minutemen, as the teams meet for the 42nd time in program history. As non-conference opponents, the two programs first met on March 23, 1979, on the road. UMass topped Richmond, 17-5 on the day. The Minutemen and Spiders last met for a three-game series on March 23 through March 25, 2018. Richmond claimed the series, 2-1, as Massachusetts' one victory came in game two, edging out Richmond, 2-1.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 14 homeruns in 24 games played, from seven Minutemen. Hanson leads the production with four, followed closely by Nolan Tichy with three. Steve Luttazi and MacLean recorded two, so far, each, while Gervasi, Sam Hill and Ryan Coleman have one apiece.
 
Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn.

On A Roll…
Eleven Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. MacLean sits atop the leaderboard with six, while Hanson has five games. Sam Hill tallied four, while four Minutemen are on a two-game streak. Four other players are riding a one-contest streak.   
 
Zack Zaetta is on a current 13-game reached base streak, as Tichy follows with 10. MacLean recorded nine straight games with a reached base streak, while Toth and Hanson have seven and five, respectively. Hill is ona four-game streak, with Jacob Sloss on a three-game streak. Luttazi and Justin Blumenthal both have two-games with a reached base streak. Zaetta holds the teams' longest streak with his current total of 13 games. Both Tichy (10) and MacLean's (9) current consecutive game totals are the teams' second and third longest, respectively.

[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 44. Luttazi leads the production with 10, which included three three-hit contests and one four hit game. Zaetta follows with eight, as MacLean and Hanson registered six each. Tichy totaled five, including two four-hit contests. Gervasi and Toth tallied three apiece, while Chris Pearsons, Sloss and Hill all contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.
 
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 20 multi-RBI games, led by Hanson and Luttazi with five and four, respectively, including one three-run contest from each. Tichy has three, while, Gervasi has garnered two multi-RBI contests. Six other Minutemen have tallied one game each, with a three-run contest from Sloss.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
 
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
