Baseball Bested By Richmond, 6-2, In Game One

Minutemen and Spiders gear up for game two on Saturday, April 15, at 1 p.m.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 6-2 contest to University of Richmond on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
Will MacLean led UMass, going 3-for-5 on the day, followed by Steve Luttazi, who went 2-for-3. Carter Hanson and Sam Hill also tallied a hit each, including Hill's double. Michael Toth and Justin Blumenthal recorded an RBI apiece, while Luttazi and Hill scored the two runs fro the Minutemen.
After a scoreless opening frame, Massachusetts got on the board first in the second. Hill led off with a double to left center field, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Toth claimed first on a hit-by-pitch, with Blumenthal stepping up to the plate. Blumenthal grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Hill to score from third, making it a 1-0 contest.
Richmond tied up the game in the third with a RBI single to right center field. The Spiders pulled ahead, 2-1, in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly, before another sacrifice fly extended their lead to 3-1 at the top of the sixth.
UMass closed the gap back to one on a sacrifice fly of its own. Luttazi singled to right field to start off the Minutemen, before another single from Hanson through the right side put runners on second and first. A sacrifice bunt from Hill positioned Luttazi at third and Hanson on second, and a sacrifice fly from Toth pushed Luttazi across the plate.
Richmond scored another run on a RBI single in the seventh, to make it a 4-2 game, before a two-run homer for the Spiders gave them the final score of 6-2.
Renn Lints (0-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, giving up two hits on four hits, walking four and dealing two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work. Brock Weirather (3-2) received the winning decision for Richmond, going seven complete innings, and allowing only two runs on seven hits and striking out three.
