UMass strikes early, but Spiders post six runs in fifth inning to secure outcome
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball concluded its opening weekend of Atlantic 10 play with a 7-1 setback to Richmond on Sunday at Pitt Field in the rubber match of the teams' three-game series.
Â
Marcus Fry went 1-for-3 on the day, doubling for the second time in as many days, while Eddy Hart went 1-for-3 and scored the Minutemen's lone run of the contest. In the ninth inning, Ryan Lever slapped a one-out single to extend his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games.
Â
Massachusetts needed little time to get on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Batting out of the leadoff spot, Hart dropped a single into left field before a fielding error moved him into scoring position. After Lever grounded out, Nolan Kessinger's sacrifice fly to right field brought Hart home and gave Kessinger his team-leading 11th RBI of the season.
Â
The contest was knotted up at one-apiece two innings later, when Richmond's Vinny Capra laced a base hit to left field, allowing Jordan Schulefand to score from second.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth the Spiders took the lead for good after putting up a six-spot. Capra doubled down the left field line to drive in a pair, followed up by an RBI groundout by Daniel Brumbaugh and a two-run triple to deep right by Kyle Adams. Kyle Schmidt wrapped up the sequence, bringing in Adams on a two-out base knock.
Â
Richmond starter Robbie Baker (2-1) picked up the win on the mound, scattering just two hits and an unearned run, striking out five and walking none through six innings. Kevin Hassett (0-2) took the loss for the Minutemen, working 4.2 innings and being charged with seven runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three.
Â
Carter Knapek threw the final 1.1 innings for Massachusetts, walking only one and striking out four of the final five batters he faced.
Â
Capra went 2-for-3 to pace the Spiders, finishing the afternoon with three RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
Â
Sunday's loss drops the Minutemen to 7-6 on the season and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 contests, while Richmond improves to 14-9 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Â
The Minutemen now turn their attention to a Tues., March 27 contest at America East foe Albany. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
