Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball welcomes Northeastern University to Earl Lorden Field on Tuesday, April 11, for the Second Round of the 32nd Baseball Beanpot. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., on ESPN+.

UMass holds a 4-19 overall record with a series loss to Atlantic 10 foe Davidson, while Northeastern sits at 25-6 overall on the season, and are coming off a series win against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent Delaware, with a 9-0 triumph in game two and a 20-5 victory in the finale.

Recap in a Minute
UMass fell to Davidson in the three-game series last weekend. In game two of the series, Massachusetts began a ninth inning rally, but came up short, 4-3, to the Wildcats.

During game two, four Minutemen contributed one hit each, including a home run by Carter Hanson. Hanson added a run and RBI, while Mike Gervasi had a RBI of his own. Zack Zaetta and Will MacLean tallied a run for the Minutemen.

Minutemen in the Beanpot
Massachusetts has competed annually in the Beanpot since 1996 and captured the tournament crown six times (1996-98, 2000, 2008, 2012). Perhaps one of the most notable Beanpot pitching performances in program history came on April 22, 19997, when former Minuteman Scott Barnsby dealt a no-hitter at Fenway Park in the Semifinals against Northeastern. Barnsby's no-no was the first within the confines of the historic ballpark since 1965 and first such nine-inning performance by a UMass pitcher since 1957.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Beanpot Tournament was canceled, and the 2021 tournament was not held.

In the tournament, UMass holds a 25-25 overall record, while Northeastern holds an 8-7 advantage in the series.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 14 homeruns in 23 games played, from seven Minutemen. Hanson leads the production with four, followed closely by Nolan Tichy with three. Steve Luttazi and MacLean recorded two, so far, each, while Gervasi, Sam Hill and Ryan Coleman have one apiece.

Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn.

On A Roll…
Eleven Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. MacLean sits atop the leaderboard with five, while Hanson has four games. Hill and Kevin Skagerlind tallied three and two, respectively, as seven Minutemen are on a one game streak.

Zaetta is on a current 12-game reached base streak, as Tichy follows with nine. MacLean recorded eight straight games with a reached base streak, while Toth and Hanson have six and four, respectively. Jacob Sloss and Hill are both on a three-game streak, with Skagerlind has two games. Zaetta holds the teams' longest streak with his current total of 12 games. Both Tichy (9) and MacLean's (8) current consecutive game totals are the teams' second and third longest, respectively.

Zaetta follows with eight, as MacLean, Tichy and Hanson registered five each, which includes two four-hit contests from Tichy. Gervasi and Toth tallied three and two, respectively.  Chris Pearsons, Sloss and Hill all contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
