#11/13 Yale Runs Past Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse, 18-9

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts men's lacrosse held a 3-2 lead after the first, but a seven-goal second quarter helped No. 11/13 Yale pull away from the Gorillas, handing UMass a 18-9 setback at Garber Field on Friday afternoon. The loss leaves Massachusetts at 2-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs move to 2-1.
Graduate student Gabriel Procyk posted his second hat trick of the season for the Gorillas, while junior Grant Breyo had two goals and an assist to match his single-game career best. Shane O'Leary scored two and Mike Tobin collected three assists, equaling a career high.
Chris Lyons and Matt Brandau combined for nine of Yale's 18 tallies, with Brandau also added four assists for an eight-point effort. Leo Johnson and Johnny Keib had two goals each, as well.
Brad Sharp opened the scoring 30 seconds into the contest for the Bulldogs before Procyk answered with his seventh of the season from Carter Castillo on a man-up opportunity for UMass at the 12:23 mark. O'Leary put the Gorillas in front 2-1 with 8:29 on the clock and after Kieb, responded for Yale to knot things at 2-2, Procyk capped the quarter with his second of the day from Tobin at 2:11.
Kieb converted again 31 seconds into the second quarter, beginning a 9-2 run from the Bulldogs that stretched until midway through the third until Procyk completed his hat trick with his second man-up tally of the day with 7:27 left in the stanza.
Yale went on to net seven of the next eight before the Gorillas capped the scoring with Tim Hoynes scoring with 3:50 remaining in the contest and Aiden Drunsic picking up his first collegiate goal from classmate Zach Abule with 44 seconds to go.
The Bulldogs finished with a 55-44 shot advantage while ground balls were even at 38 apiece. UMass converted 3-of-6 extra man opportunities and Yale was 1-for-4.
Goalkeeper Matt Knote logged 16 stops for the Gorillas and Jared Paquette had 22 saves for Yale.
Massachusetts will return to action on Tuesday, March 7, when the squad will play its first of two straight on the road, traveling to UAlbany for a 3 p.m. matchup.
