Offense Comes Alive Early As Baseball Defeats UAlbany, 8-2

Five Minutemen record multi-hit efforts in the victory.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball exploded for four runs in the first en route to an 8-2 win over University of Albany on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Five Minutemen posted multi-hit efforts in the victory, led by junior Nolan Tichy with four.
Tichy went 4-for-4, adding two RBI, while Will MacLean followed with three hits, including his second home run of the year, one run and an RBI. Zack Zaetta and Steve Luttazi recorded two hits apiece, which included two doubles from Luttazi, to go along with two runs each, with Luttazi knocking in two runs. Michael Toth had the first multi-hit game of his career, tallying two hits and an RBI of his own, as Kyle Hoog and Justin Blumenthal had one hit each. Kevin Skagerlind, Mike Gervasi and Blumenthal scored on run apiece.
Zaetta led off the opening frame for the Minutemen with a walk, before Skagerlind took his base after being hit by a pitch. With one out, Gervasi was hit by a pitch to take first base and load up the bases. Luttazi hit a two-RBI double to right field, as UMass grabbed a 2-0 lead. A single through the left side from Tichy brought Gervasi home, and Luttazi crossed the plate on a fielder's choice, making it a 4-0 contest.
In the fourth, Massachusetts tacked on two more runs, extending its lead to 6-0. Blumenthal began the inning with a single through the left side, advancing to second on an error by the Great Danes. With one out, Blumenthal advanced to third on a ground out from Skagerlind. A wild pitch sent Blumenthal across the dish before a solo homer from MacLean pushed the Minutemen further ahead.
UAlbany plated two unearned runs in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI single up the middle. UMass tallied another run in the bottom half of the inning, as Luttazi led off with a double to right center field and Tichy drove him home with a single through the right side.
The Minutemen totaled one more run in the eighth frame, thanks to an RBI single from Toth that allowed Zaetta to score. Massachusetts held the Great Danes scoreless in the top of the ninth to maintain the 8-2 triumph.
Cole Koeppel (1-0) received his first collegiate winning decision, giving up only two runs on as many hits, walking one batter and dealing a career best five strikeouts in two innings of work. Rob Manetta (0-2) took the loss for UAlbany, tossing 0.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and one walk with no strikes thrown.
Massachusetts prepares for its first Atlantic 10 Conference series in Saint Louis, Missouri, as the Minutemen face Saint Louis on Friday, March 31 through Sunday, April 2. Friday's contest beginas at 7 p.m., before a 3 p.m. Saturday game. The series finale is slated for a 1 p.m. start time on Sunday.
