Baseball Falls, 9-4, To Saint Louis In Game One

ST. LOUIS – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to Saint Louis University in the first of three games on Friday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center. UMass moves to 4-13 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Saint Louis improved to 13-10 on the season and 1-0 in the league.
Steve Luttazi led the Minutemen, going 3-for-4 on the afternoon, and tallying two runs. Will MacLean and Carter Hanson contributed two hits apiece. Zack Zaetta, Nolan Tichy, Jacob Sloss and Jake Given added one hit each, as Tichy recorded two runs. Chris Pearsons, Sloss and Given all had a RBI on the day.
Saint Louis took a 2-0 lead in the first, as back-to-back batters were walked with the bases loaded. In the second inning, Luttazi singled to right with one out, before Hanson hit a single to right field, as well. Sloss hit a single of his own to center field and advanced to second on the throw, sending Luttazi across the plate to get one run back.
With the Billikens holding a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth, the Minutemen secured two runs to pull ahead of Saint Louis, 3-2, in the top half. After Tichy reached on a walk, Luttazi singled to left center field. Hanson saw four balls to take first, loading the bases up for UMass. Pearsons hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Tichy to tag up and score. Sloss reached on a fielder's choice, positioning Luttazi on third. Luttazi plated his second run of the day on a single through the left side from Given.
The Billikens reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth frame with a bases loaded two-run double to left field, making it a 5-3 contest. Saint Louis tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly to right field. SLU scored two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to hold an 8-3 advantage.
The two teams traded a run each in the eighth inning, but Saint Louis came out on top, 9-4.
Jack Pawloski (1-1) had the loss for Massachusetts, pitching three innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Pawloski walked one and tied his career-high with four strikeouts. Henry Litman (2-1) earned the win for Saint Louis, allowing only three runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out four in five complete innings.
