#16 UMass Downs La Salle 19-5 For Eighth Straight Win

Alex Finn scored three goals and added five assists for eight points while Charlotte Wilmoth posted a game-high five goals.
AMHERST, Mass. – The no. 16-ranked UMass women's lacrosse team won its eighth consecutive game on Wednesday with a 19-5 win over La Salle on Garber Field. The Minutewomen (9-1 Overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) were led offensively by Alex Finn's three goals and five assists for eight points while Charlotte Wilmoth posted a game-high five goals.
Wilmoth opened the afternoon by scoring four of her five goals in the first quarter, including the game's opening goal just over a minute into play. Wilmoth's third of the quarter helped put the Minutewomen ahead 6-0 prior to Lauren Tolve's goal off an assist from Finn that made it 7-0. UMass ended the first quarter with an 8-1 advantage after Wilmoth's fourth goal of the quarter with just seven seconds remaining. The five goals on the day moved Wilmoth into the lead on the team in goals with 23 this season.
Both squads finished with three goals each in the second period, with Amy Moreau opening UMass' scoring on a player down goal with 11:54 left in the second. The Explorers scored two consecutive goals down the stretch in the second before Fiona McGowan found Tessa Shields with five seconds left to make it an 11-4 game heading into the break.
After La Salle scored its final goal of the afternoon with 11:03 to go in the third to make it an 11-5 contest, UMass went on to close out the day with eight unanswered goals. Finn got the scoring started for the Minutewomen in the third before Kassidy Morris and Moreau added goals to put UMass ahead by nine. McGowan made it a 15-5 contest with 3:29 left in the third and finished with four assists for five points to give her a team-leading 24 assists and team-best 45 points this season.
Four different Minutewomen found the back of the net in the fourth while the UMass defense held La Salle without a goal in the fourth and scoreless for the final 26:03 of play. Hannah Heller scored one of her two goals on the day with 10:42 left while Tolve put home the last goal of the afternoon at 5:59 on her way to finishing with two goals and an assist for three points.
Defensively, Heller forced the Explorers into six turnovers and recorded eight draw controls. Jordan Dean led all players with a game-high 11 draw controls for a UMass squad that out-drew La Salle 22-6 on the afternoon. The Minutewomen forced the Explorers into 25 turnovers on the day with Moreau, Kylee Bowen, and Audra Tosone each adding two caused turnovers.
Gina Carroll recorded her sixth win of the season in goal for the Minutewomen as she finished with a save in the first half of action. Catrina Tobin entered in the second half and picked up two saves while allowing one goal in 30 minutes of play.
The Minutewomen hit the road for their next two games and begin the road trip on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Olean, N.Y. against St. Bonaventure.
