Baseball Drops Doubleheader Pair At Penn

Minutemen fall to Quakers 9-3 in game one, 19-4 in game two.
UMass prepares for two midweek road contests, visiting Holy Cross first on Tuesday, March 21, at 5 p.m., in Worcester, Mass., before making the trip to Storrs, Connecticut, to face UConn on Wednesday, March 22 at 3 p.m.
Game 1
Penn 9, Massachusetts 3 (9 innings)
Zack Zaetta led with two hits, including a triple, while tallying one run. Mike Gervasi, Carter Hanson, Jacob Sloss and Michael Toth all totaled a hit on the day, as Nolan Tichy, Hanson and Sloss recorded one RBI apiece. Zaetta, Gervasi and Hanson scored for the Minutemen.
Penn held an early lead with two-run second inning. With the score remaining 2-0, throughout the fourth, fifth and sixth frames, the Quakers grabbed three more runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to extend their lead to 9-0.
UMass got on the board in the ninth inning, as Zaetta started off with a triple to right center field. With one out, Tichy hit a groundball, allowing Zaetta to touch the plate. Gervasi stepped up to the plate, hitting a double down the left field line, before Hanson drove in Gervasi with an RBI single. Sloss registered a double to center field, bringing Hanson around to score with two outs. Penn was able to record the final out of the contest to win 9-3.
Taylor Perrett (1-2) received the loss for UMass after allowing two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out four in five complete innings. Cole Zaffiro (1-1) got the win for Penn, allowing no runs, two hits, walking two and dealing seven strikeouts in a seven-inning outing.
Game 2
Penn 19, Massachusetts 4 (7 innings)
Tichy and Jake Given led the team with two RBI apiece, while both Tichy recorded a two-run homer and Given garnered a double as their one hit of the day. Hanson, Tichy, Kyle Hoog and Justin Blumenthal tallied one run each. Hanson also contributed a double on the afternoon.
UMass got off to a strong start in the first, as Hanson doubled to right center field to get in scoring position. Tichy came up to the plate, crushing his first long ball of the season over the center field fence, scoring two to take the lead.
Penn plated seven runs in the second inning to claim the lead. The Quakers tallied three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, seven more in the fifth and one more in the sixth to extend their lead to 19-2. In the seventh frame, a double from Given knocked in Hoog and Blumenthal to tack on two more runs, but Penn registered its final two outs to end the game, 19-4.
Dylan Terwilliger (1-2) took the loss on the mound for UMass. Terwilliger gave up seven runs on four hits and walked two with no strikes. Ryan Dromboski (2-1) threw five complete innings, allowing only two runs on as many hits, walked one and dealt nine strikeouts to earn the win for Penn.
