Late Rally Not Enough In Baseball’s 4-3 Loss To Holy Cross

March 21, 2023 | Baseball

A two-run eighth saw the tying run on third with the go-ahead run on first, but the Minutemen fell short.

WORCESTER, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball rallied late but was unable to battle back in a 4-3 loss to Holy Cross at Fitton Field on Tuesday evening. Massachusetts tallied two runs in the eighth inning with the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first but were not able to capitalize.

Carter Hanson and Steve Luttazi led UMass with two hits apiece, as five other Minutemen contributed a hit on the evening. Kyle Hoog recorded a team-high two RBI on a double, while Luttazi added one. Will MacLean, Ryan Coleman and Chris Pearsons all crossed the plate for Massachusetts.

With UMass and Holy Cross entering the second inning scoreless, MacLean led off the top of the frame with a double to center field, before a ground ball from Jacob Sloss allowed MacLean to advance to third. Luttazi hit a single up the middle, bringing in MacLean to score and take a 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders got a run back in the third on a RBI double to left field, knotting the game up at 1-1. In the sixth inning, Holy Cross registered a three-run homer to claim a 4-1 lead.

With one out in the eighth, Luttazi took his base after getting hit by a pitch. Coleman entered as a pinch runner for Luttazi, as Coleman advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pearsons held a 3-1 count, before seeing another ball to take first. Another wild pitch by Holy Cross allowed Coleman and Pearsons to move to third and second, respectively. Hoog knocked in Coleman and Pearsons on a double to left field, making it a 4-3 contest, with Holy Cross still holding the advantage. Zack Zaetta grounded out to the second baseman, while Hoog was able to get into scoring position. Hanson was walked on a full count, but the Crusaders picked up their final out of the inning to leave the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Holy Cross was held off form scoring in the bottom of the inning, but UMass could not complete its rally in the top of the ninth, bringing the game to its final score of 4-3.

Mikey Jensen (0-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, after allowing one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Ben Talbot (1-0) received the win for Holy Cross, giving up three hits with no runs and striking out two in two complete innings. Oliver Brown earned the save, going 1.1 innings, walking three and dealing two strikeouts.

UMass heads to Storrs, Connecticut, to face UConn on Wednesday, March 22 at 3 p.m., at Elliot Ballpark. The game will be streamed on UConn+.
