Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball team travels to Boiling Springs, North Carolina, for a midweek matchup against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 15, at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
 
The Minutemen hold a 2-4 overall record on the season, while the Runnin' Bulldogs are 10-6 on the year, including a 9-5 home record.  Gardner-Webb is also on a four-game win streak, while winning nine of its last 11 games.
 
Recap in a Minute
UMass dropped the weekend series at UNC Asheville, falling 13-2 on Friday, and 10-3 and 7-3, respectively, in Saturday's doubleheader.
 
In game one of the doubleheader, Zack Zaetta recorded his first collegiate triple, while Sam Hill registered his first career home run in game two of the day. Carter Hanson added a long ball of his own in game two on Saturday, marking his second of the season.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied six homeruns in as many games played, from five Minutemen. Hanson leads the team with two, while Ryan Coleman, Hill, Steve Luttazi and Will MacLean have one each on the year.
 
Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively.

On A Roll…
Five Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Hanson sits atop the leaderboard with a streak of six, while Hill follows with three. MacLean, Nolan Tichy and Michael Toth all have a one game hitting streak. As Hanson holds the longest streak for UMass, Zack Zaetta, Jacob Sloss, Mike Gervasi and Luttazi all tallied four games each, before the streaks came to an end.
 
Hanson, MacLean and Zaetta are on a current six-game reached base streak, as Hill and Tichy has three, followed by Toth with one.
 
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
 
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
 
On Deck
Massachusetts makes a trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a three-game series on Friday, March 17 through Sunday, March 19, as the Minutemen face Penn. Friday's contest begins at 2 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ from Meiklejohn Stadium.
