Baseball Comes Up Short In Extras At Gardner-Webb, 4-3

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball came up short, 4-3, to Gardner-Webb in extra innings, in the first meeting between the two programs on Wednesday evening at Bill Masters Field. Following the setback, UMass is now 2-5 overall, while Gardner-Webb improved to 11-6 on the year.
Nolan Tichy led the team with four hits in five at bats, including registering two doubles on the evening. Zack Zaetta followed going 2-for-4, adding one double, a run and a RBI to his stat line. Chris Pearsons, Steve Luttazi and Jacob Sloss all recorded one hit, while Luttazi contributed a RBI. Pearsons and Kevin Skagerlind scored one run apiece, along with Zaetta.
A single up the middle from Zaetta opened the first frame, before he advanced to second on a passed ball. After one out, Tichy stood at the plate with a 3-1 count as Zaetta stole third. A throwing error by Gardner-Webb's pitcher allowed Zaetta to cross the plate for the first run of the game.
The Minutemen held their lead through four innings, but a RBI double from the Runnin' Bulldogs pushed a run across home, tying the contest up at 1-1 in the fifth. Gardner-Webb added to its total to claim a 2-1 lead in the sixth, as the batter was walked with the bases loaded.
In the seventh inning, Pearsons led off with a walk, before a sacrifice bunt from Sam Hill advanced Pearsons to second. Pearsons put himself in scoring position off a passed ball with Luttazi at the plate. Luttazi drove in Pearsons on a single to right field, bringing the game to a 2-2 draw.
Both teams were held scoreless through the remaining two and a half frames, forcing extra innings. With no runs scored for either team in the 10th or 11th inning, the Minutemen took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th off as Zaetta doubled to right field, knocking in Skagerlind.
In the bottom of the 12th inning, the Runnin' Bulldogs hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-3 game. After a single to left field put a runner on first for Gardner-Webb. The next batter hit the ball into right field, but an error advanced the batter to third and sending in the game-winning run.
