Baseball Falters To UNC Asheville In Doubleheader

Minutemen fall to Bulldogs 10-3 in game one, and 7-3 in game two.
The Minutemen head over to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a midweek matchup with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 15. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ at 5 p.m. at Bill Masters Field.
Game 1
UNC Asheville 10, Massachusetts 3
Kevin Skagerlind, Carter Hanson and Justin Blumenthal all led UMass with an RBI each, while six Minutemen tallied one hit apiece. Steve Luttazi, Sam Hill and Zack Zaetta crossed the plate for Massachusetts. Zaetta recorded his first collegiate triple on the day, as Luttazi, Hanson and Blumenthal each registered a double.
Scoreless through the first, UMass struck first early in the top of the second inning. Luttazi reached base after being walked, before a double by Hanson to left center field drove Luttazi around to score. The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half of the second with a run of their own as a sacrifice fly allowed the runner from third to touch the plate, knotting up the game at 1-1.
Zaetta's triple to right center field opened the third frame for Massachusetts. Skagerlind steeped up to the plate, grounding out to the shortstop, but bringing Zaetta across the dish, as the Minutemen took a 2-1 lead. UNC Asheville picked up three runs in the bottom of the third to claim a 5-2 lead.
The Bulldogs added two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, and scored one more in the seventh frame to make it a 10-2 contest. In the ninth, Hill was walked, before Blumenthal's RBI double to center field tacked on a run for the Minutemen. UNC Asheville recorded the final out of the game to notch the 10-3 win.
Taylor Perrett (1-1) received the loss for UMass after allowing five runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one in three innings. Ryan Douglas earned the win for the Bulldogs, going five complete innings and giving up two runs on three hits and dealing eight strikeouts. Blake Little recorded the save for UNC Asheville, allowing only one run on three hits and registering on strikeout in a four-inning outing.
Game 2
UNC Asheville 7, Massachusetts 3
Hanson led the team with two RBI, as Nolan Tichy led with two hits and Hill had a team-high two runs. Hanson and Hill had a home run each, marking Hanson's second homer of the year and Hill's first collegiate long ball. Hill also tallied an RBI, while Will MacLean, Hill and Hanson had one hit apiece. Hanson scored the third run for the Minutemen.
After a scoreless first frame, UNC Asheville registered six runs in the second inning, claiming the lead. The Minutemen were able to get on the board in the fifth frame with Hill's solo home run over the left center field fence.
Massachusetts earned two more runs in the top of the seventh after Hanson's two RBI shot over the right center field side. UNC Asheville notched another run in the bottom of the seventh. Both teams held off one another in the eighth, while the Bulldogs retired the side in the final inning, bringing the game to its final score of 7-3.
Tyler Dalton (0-2) took the loss on the mound for UMass. Dalton gave up six runs on four hits, walked three and struck out one batter in two innings. Justin Honeycutt picked up the win for the Bulldogs, throwing five complete innings and allowing only one run on three hits and tallying three strikeouts.
