AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts swimming and diving returns to competition this weekend at the three-day Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, on Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19. Competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues into the evening at 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, while Sunday competition begins at 10 a.m., picking back up at 5 p.m., at the BU Fitness and Recreation Center.
 
Along with UMass and BU, Fairfield and Northeastern will also be competing in the invite. Northeastern will only be competing on the women's side.
 
Last Time Out
The Minutemen and Minutewomen fell to Boston University on November 4, as the men's team dropped the dual 158-141, while the women faltered 153-145 at home. The men's squad tallied 24 top-three finishes and collected six gold medals on the day, with the women's team totaling 25 top-three finishes and picking up eight first-place finishes.
 
Sophomore Andrew Bell completed the one-meter dive with a score of 385.43 to break the previous record of 334.50 held by Jason Cook (2010-11), while earning a six-dive total of 397.28 in the three-meter dive, also breaking a previous record held by Jason Cook (2008-09). Both totals placed Bell in first on the all-time record board.  
 
Fast Freshmen
The freshmen on both squads have had impressive showings this season, garnering several season- and personal-bests. For the Minutewomen:
 
  • Diya Ackerman Vallala swam three season-bests and has a personal-best on the season
    • 1,650 freestyle - 18:14.68
       
  • Lindsay Burbage posted five season-best times, so far, this season
     
  • Beren Cakiroglu recorded five personal-bests on the year
    • 50 freestyle (relay leadoff) – 24.37
    • 50 freestyle – 24.39
    • 100 freestyle – 52.84
    • 100 freestyle (relay leadoff) – 52.94
    • 200 freestyle – 1:52.67


For the Minutemen:
 
  • Jude Boukarroum finished with six season-best times on the season, including a 16:53.74 qualifying mark in the 1650 freestyle for the CSCAA Championships in March 2024.
     
  • Aydin Erkan earned three season-best times, including a time of 16:52.70 in the 1650 freestyle to qualify for the CSCAA Championships in March 2024.  
     
Diving In
On the boards, sophomores Salem Howes and Shreeya Sinha have competed for the Minutewomen. Howes recorded personal-bests in the one-meter dive against Boston University with a score of 246.15, while scoring 231.45 in the three-meter dive against Yale. Sinha dove for the first time this season in the dual meet against Yale, scoring 169.43 in the one-meter dive and 174.53 in the three-meter dive.
 
For the Minutemen, Bell recorded qualifying scores for the NCAA Division I Men's Championships for March 2024, in both the one-meter and three-meter against Boston University in a dual meet. In the one-meter, he totaled a score of 385.43, while tallying a score of 397.28 in the three-meter, to claim first in both events and take the top spot in the all-time school/pool records. Zak Teffahi joined Bell on the boards, scoring season-bests of 186.08 in the one-meter and 192.90 in the three-meter dive.
 
Weekly Honors
Three members of the women's swimming and diving team tabbed Atlantic 10 weekly awards, as senior Bri Williams was named the A-10 co-Performer of the Week,  while Cakiroglu and Burbage have been selected as the A-10 Rookie of the Week . It marked the first weekly honors for all three Minutewomen in their careers.
 
Williams earned the accolade after finishing first in both the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke, swimming a time of 58.03 and 2:06.23, respectively. She also aided the 400 medley relay team to gold with a time of 3:54.59, swimming a 58.01 time in her leg of the race, while helping the 400 free relay team to a silver medal with a time of 3:35.69.
 
Cakiroglu captured two first-place finishes in her collegiate debut, winning the 200 free with a time of 1:54.45 and the 100 free with a time of 53.33 to garner the award. She also placed fourth in the 50 free, completing the event with a time of 24.70. Cakiroglu assisted the 400 medley relay team to a silver medal (3:56.67), while helping the 400 free relay team to a bronze medal (3:38.20).
 
Burbage tabbed the honor on November 8, competing in two individual events and one relay, placing first in all three in the dual meet against Boston University on November 4. The Charlseton, South Carolina, natvie took the gold in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.21 and had a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, recording a season-best time of 2:24.26. In the 200 medley relay, she helped her team swim a time of 1:43.68 to earn first.
 
Next Up
The women's swimming and diving team will wrap up competition for the semester on Saturday, December 2, with a dual meet in Burlington, Vermont, to take on Vermont at 1 p.m.
 
The men's team, along with the women's squad, will return to the pool on Saturday, January 6, for Senior Day at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr., Pool to compete against Bryant. Diving events begin at 11 a.m., while swimming events start at 1 p.m.
