Nick Zielonka equalized with a right-footed volley in the 73rd-minute as UMass drew in the season opener at Northeastern.
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Nick Zielonka put in the equalizer in the 73rd-minute as the Massachusetts men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw at Northeastern on Thursday afternoon in the season opener. The Minutemen held strong defensively and held the Huskies without a shot on goal for the first 54 minutes of play.
UMass finished with a 12 to nine shot advantage on the afternoon with seven shots on target to Northeastern's three. Ryan Levay put all three of his shots on target, including two in the first 17 minutes, while four different Minutemen found the target with strikes.
The Minutemen nearly broke through for a goal in the 40th minute as Sefunmi Taiwo got to the end line before playing a cross in to the head of Mike Willis, who headed a shot down that was saved away at the far post by Huskies goalkeeper Colby Hegarty. Alec Hughes provided another solid scoring opportunity for the Minutemen in the 53rd-minute with a low, driven shot from just outside the box that hit the post on the far side.
Northeastern took a 1-0 lead in the 65th-minute on a Timothy Ennin goal as part of one of three shots that found the target for the home team on the day.
Zielonka's second collegiate goal equalized in the 73rd-minute as the junior connected on a volley with his right foot to beat the keeper and make it a 1-1 contest. Hughes earned the assist on the goal to mark his fifth career assist.
The Minutemen are back in action on Monday with the home opener at Rudd Field against Sacred Heart at 4 p.m.
