Baseball Completes Sweep Over Fordham With Doubleheader Win

Minutemen recorded a 7-5 victory in game one and an 8-7 win in game two of the doubleheader against the Rams on Sunday.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball earned the series sweep over Fordham University on Sunday after winning 7-5 in game one on the day and 8-7 in game two at Earl Lorden Field. The Minutemen registered its first series sweep over an opponent since taking the three-game series over Bucknell in the 2018 season, while recording the first sweep over an Atlantic 10 opponent since claiming the series against George Mason in the 2016 season.
 
UMass improved to 14-9-1 on the year, including a 5-1 A-10 Conference record, while Fordham dropped to 6-22 overall and 1-5 in the league.
 
UMass travels to Brighton, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, April 12, to take on Boston College in the Beanpot Championship at 4 p.m.
 
Game 1
Massachusetts 7, Fordham 5 (9 innings)
 
Drew DeMartino led the team with three RBI, including a two-run home run, as he went 2-for-3 on the day and contributed two runs of his own. Kevin Skagerlind and Nolan Tichy also had two hits, as Tichy added an RBI. Mike Gervasi, Will MacLean and Tichy registered a double, while Cole Hebble and Dylan Judd had one hit, as well.
 
UMass got the bats going early as Gervasi doubled to left center to Hebble home to make it a 1-0 game. With two on base, MacLean smacked the ball for a double down the left field line, sending Gervasi to cross the plate and putting DeMartino in scoring position. A ground out to the shortstop from Judd allowed DeMartino to score, before Tichy singled to right center to bring in MacLean for the fourth run on the first inning.
 
Fordham got a run back in the top of the second and another in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit in half. In the bottom of the fourth frame, DeMartino hit a two-run shot over the fence, bringing Skagerlind across the plate from second, to extend Massachusetts' lead, 6-2.
 
In the sixth frame, the Rams came back within two after scoring two in the top half of the sixth, before Skagerlind scored in the bottom half of the inning on a single to left from DeMartino to push UMass ahead 7-4.  Fordham notched one more run in the eighth, but the Minutemen defense held off the Rams to win 7-5.
 
Tyler Dalton (1-0) pitched six complete innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking two and striking out six, to get the win for UMass, while Jack Pawloski entered to earn his third save of the season, allowing one hit and two walks in 1.2 innings of work. Brooks Ey (1-5) took the loss for Fordham, giving up seven runs, 10 hits, walking three and dealing three strikeouts.
 
Game 2
Massachusetts 8, Fordham 7 (9 innings)
 
Hebble and MacLean led with two hits apiece, while Collin Shapiro had one on the only double of the contest. Judd contributed two RBI, followed by MacLean, Jacob Sloss, Tichy and Shapiro all with one each.   
 
The Minutemen jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first frame. Hebble scored on a single from MacLean to center field, before three straight walks with the bases loaded allowed Skagerlind, DeMartino and MacLean to come across home plate. Shapiro hit the ball, sending Judd in from third, but a throwing error on Fordham's pitcher helped Sloss to score an unearned run to make it 6-0.
 
The Rams trailed by one in the top of the third inning after putting up five runs. The inning saw a three-run long ball by Fordham's Sebastian Mexico that brought the team back within one.
 
Fordham took its first lead of the day, scoring two in the top half of the fifth, making it a 7-6 contest. In the bottom half of the inning, Tichy scored on a passed ball to bring the game to a 7-7 draw. UMass reclaimed the lead in the sixth as a sacrifice fly from Judd sent Gervasi home for the go-ahead run.
 
Massachusetts staved off Fordham in the final three innings to complete the sweep and edge the Rams, 8-7.
 
Max LeBlanc (2-1) secured the victory on the mound for the Minutemen, walking one and striking out one, pitching one inning. Zach Clevenger dealt four strikeouts and allowed only two hits to earn his second save of the year in three complete frames. Fordham's Robbie Stewart (0-3) had the loss, giving up one run and walking three.
