Minutewomen Pick Up Second Loss to Huskies

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (3-2) took their second loss of the season, falling to the University of Connecticut Huskies (4-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen fell 17-14.
Kendra Harbinger notched a hat-trick, netting three goals on five attempts for three total points, while five Minutewomen had multi-goal games. Leading with Harbinger, Olivia Muscella, Julia Smith, and Fiona McGowan each tallied three points on two goals and one assist each.
Audra Tosone picked up six ground balls to lead UMass, also forcing four turnovers. Amy Moreau notched a season high seven draw controls, caused three turnovers, and picked up two ground balls in the effort.
The Minutewomen held a 32-27 advantage in shots, putting 25 on goal. Massachusetts also went 13-16 on clears and caused 18 turnovers. Gina Carroll tallied seven saves in 60 minutes in goal.
Kate Shaffer and Susan Lafountain led the Husky effort with four goals each.
Massachusetts started off with three unanswered goals in the first stanza, but the UConn kept it close, putting two between the pipes on back-to-back possessions.
Heading into the intermission, Massachusetts held the 11-8 advantage. UConn opened the second half with three straight goals to tie the game up 11-11. While the Minutewomen kept the score within arm's reach, the Huskies outscored the hosts 9-3 in the second half to come away with the 17-14 victory.
The Minutewomen will take the field again on March 11 at Vanderbilt. First draw is set for 8 p.m. EST.
