Luttazi's Career Day Carries Massachusetts Baseball Over Georgetown, 9-3

March 04, 2022 | Baseball

Luttazi clubs first career grand slam in Friday afternoon victory.

Washington, D.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball kicked off their 2022 season with a 9-3 victor over Georgetown University at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Friday afternoon. Two Minutemen contributed multiple hits in the win, including first baseman Steve Luttazi who highlighted the day with a two-run home run and his first career grand slam, for a career-best six RBIs. Infielder Cole Hebble also added two hits as well.

On the mound, Kevin Dow (1-0) received the win, throwing for four innings, allowing five hits, no runs and striking out three. Max LeBlanc threw for four innings, getting six strikeouts, and allowing four hits and two runs on the day, before Blake Bennett came in to close out the game on the mound.

After a scoreless first inning, Luttazi knocked out of right field to bring around Kevin Skagerlind, who reached first on a base on balls, to get UMass on the board first.  The Minutemen were able to stave off the Hoyas from earning a run in the bottom of the second, as the two teams headed into the third.

The score remained 2-0 into the eighth inning, where UMass collected seven runs. Ryan Coleman singled to center field, before Collin Shapiro walked to advance Coleman to second base. Hebble bunted to the pitcher, but reached first, moving Coleman into scoring position and Shapiro to second. Drew DeMartino hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Coleman to score the first run of the inning. Later in the inning, Mike Gervasi doubled to left center, sending Shapiro and Hebble to home plate. With Gervasi on second, Aidan Wilde walked, before Skagerlind got hit by a pitch that let him take his base. At the plate, Luttazi sailed the ball out over right field for his second home run of the day to cap the scoring at nine for the Minutemen.

Georgetown tallied two runs in the bottom of the eighth and one more in the final frame, but it was not enough to catch up to Massachusetts. Andrew Williams (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Hoyas.

UMass squares off with Georgetown for the second game of the weekend series on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m., at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
