Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball team travels to Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 15, to match up against the United States Naval Academy at Max Bishop Stadium. The contest is set to start at 2 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 16, Massachusetts heads to Baltimore, Md., to play UMBC at Alumni Field. The two teams are set to begin at 3 p.m.

Recap in a Minute
UMass wrapped a three-game weekend with Penn State on Sunday, as the Nittany Lions took the series, 2-1, at Coleman Field at the USA Baseball Training Complex.

The Minutemen picked up an 11-4 victory in game two on Saturday, to even the series. UMass scored runs in all but the fifth and ninth innings, highlighted by a three-run third frame.

Mike Gervasi went 3-for-5 on the day to lead UMass, while Drew DeMartino added two hits of his own. Gervasi and DeMartino recorded one double and one triple apiece, both knocking in two RBIs and registering one run each. Dylan Judd scored three runs on the day, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Penn State came out on top in both game one and three on the weekend.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.

 All-Time vs. Navy
The Minutemen and Midshipmen will meet for the eighth time in program history, as Navy leads, 6-1, in the all-time series. The two programs first met on March 14, 2009, at Navy, where the Midshipmen won 6-5 in 10 innings. The last meeting between Massachusetts and Navy was on March 1, 2020. The two teams played a doubleheader that saw Navy take both games, winning 4-2 in seven frames in game one and 17-5 in game two of the day.

UMass' only triumph against Navy was on the road on March 2, 2019, as the Minutemen blanked the Midshipmen, 3-0.

All-Time vs. UMBC
The Minutemen and Retrievers are meeting for the fifth time with the all-time series at a 2-2 draw. The first meeting occurred on March 23, 1989, at a neutral site, as UMBC went on to win, 14-3, before UMass earned a 9-3 victory in the second game of day's doubleheader. The two programs last met on March 20, 2011, where the Minutemen defeated the Retrievers, 9-5, at a neutral site.

It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied five homeruns in the first seven games, from four Minutemen. Steve Luttazi leads the team with two followed by Mike Gervasi, Hebble, and Tichy with one each. Luttazi had a stellar first game with two homeruns including a grand slam, and Gervasi was the only homerun in the team's second meeting with Georgetown.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts will prepare for a three-game series at Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, March 18 through Sunday, March 20. First pitch in Teaneck, New Jersey, is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's contest will begin at 1 p.m. The series will close out with a 12 p.m. start on Sunday.
