Kessinger clubs his first homer of season and Walsh contributes three RBI
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball was dealt a doubleheader sweep at Navy on Sunday, with the Midshipmen coming away with a 4-2, seven-inning win in game one as well as a 17-5 decision in the series finale.
The Minutemen return to action on Fri., March 6, traveling to No. 4 Georgia to begin a three-game series. First pitch in the opener is set for 6 p.m. at Foley Field and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
Game 1
Navy 4, Massachusetts 2 (7 innings)
Senior Nolan Kessinger clubbed his first home run of the 2020 season and three other Minutemen contributed hits in sophomore Christian Walsh and freshmen Ryan Coleman and Chris Pearsons.
Navy took a 2-0 lead after one inning, but the Minutemen quickly pulled even in the top of the third. Coleman battled back from a 0-2 count to work a leadoff walk, then Kessinger smacked the first pitch he saw over the right field fence.
But the Midshipmen answered in the bottom half of the frame when Alex Smith came home on an Evan Lowery sacrifice fly. Navy added an insurance run the following inning with an RBI single from Nico Valdez that ultimately brought the score to 4-2.
Pearsons singled to bring the tying run to the plate for UMass in the top of the seventh, but Navy then brought on Trey Braithwaite for a two-out save and closed out the ballgame.
Junior Ben Shields (0-1) struck out four in his four-inning start, during which Shields scattered four runs on five hits and four walks. Colin Jones (2-0) earned the win for Navy, going 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, striking out four and allowing two hits before Braithwaite finished the contest on the bump.
Game 2
Navy 17, Massachusetts 5
Three Minutemen contributed three hits apiece, but Navy used an early jump with four-spots in the first two innings to pull away. Coleman (3-for-4) recorded his first three-hit performance which included his second double of the season, and redshirt junior Anthony Videtto drove in two with a two-bagger in the fifth inning.
Videtto scored twice and sophomore Michael Rounds went 3-for-5 with a run scored in the cleanup spot.
Walsh popped a two-run single through the right side in the top of the seventh, scoring Rounds and Videtto, before Walsh recorded his third RBI of the contest with a ninth-inning sac fly that plated Videtto.
Trent Topping (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Navy with 1.1 innings of relief. Sophomore Jack Steele (0-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, working 1.1 innings in the start.
