Baseball Rallies For 4-3 Decision At Navy

Minutemen score in eighth and hold off Midshipmen in final two frames to come out on top.
Four Minutemen registered two hits apiece on the day, highlighted by a double each from Dylan Judd and Nolan Tichy. Drew DeMartino earned a double of his own to bring around the game-winning run. Along with DeMartino, Judd, Christian Walsh and Kevin Skagerlind recorded one RBI.
After a double from Judd early in the top of the second inning, Tichy singled to left field and aided Judd into scoring position. Walsh reached first base on a fielder's choice, allowing Judd to cross the plate first for UMass. A wild pitch advance Walsh to second, before Skagerlind singled to center field to bring home Walsh, making it a 2-0 contest.
In the fifth frame, Navy was able to close the gap to two, scoring late. A two-run home run from the Midshipmen gave the team a 3-2 lead. The seventh inning saw Massachusetts bring the game to a 3-3 draw after a single from Judd sent DeMartino home from third.
Collin Shapiro and Cole Hebble walked in the eighth inning, before DeMartino had a ground rule double. Hebble advanced to third as Shapiro scored the game-winning run. Massachusetts held off Navy in the bottom of the eighth and ninth to win, 4-3.
Zach Clevenger recorded the win (1-0) for UMass, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing no hits or runs and striking out two. Jack Pawloski earned the fourth save of his career, giving up one hit and recording four strikeouts in two innings of work. Tyler Dalton started on the mound, going five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and striking out six, before Charlie Devin pitched 0.1 frames, giving up one hit and one hit. Owen Beisty of Navy took the loss, allowing a run and two walks in 0.1 innings of work.
Massachusetts will be back in action on Wednesday, March 16, taking on UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland, at 3 p.m.
