Baseball Drops Series Finale To Penn State, 1-0

Nittany Lions push one across in the first to hold on to the lead.
CARY, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 1-0, to Penn State University on Sunday morning at Coleman Field at the USA Baseball Training Complex. The Minutemen move to 2-4-1 on the season, while the Nittany Lions improve to 5-9 overall.
Mike Gervasi recorded the lone hit for UMass on the day, while Kevin Skagerlind registered a walk.
Early in the first inning, Matt Wood of Penn State homered to right field, notching the only run of the contest. The next eight frames remained scoreless, as Penn State was able to maintain their 1-0 lead.
Daniel Livnat (0-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, giving up one run on eight hits, one walk and striking out four in six innings of work. Zach Clevenger entered the game, going 1.2 innings, totaling two strikeouts, while Jack Pawloski came in for 0.1 innings. Penn State's Mason Mellott earned the win, pitching in five frames, allowing only one hit, one walk and striking out three. Tyler Shingledecker and Jaden Henline entered the game, as well, for three and one innings of work, respectively. Shingledecker struck out four, while Henline got the save, striking out two.
Massachusetts heads to Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 15, for a match up with Navy at 2 p.m.
