Massachusetts Baseball Evens Series With 11-4 Victory Over Penn State

The Minutemen and Nittany Lions face off in the final game of the series on Sunday, March 13 at 11 a.m.

CARY, N.C. – University of Massachusetts tied up the weekend series with Penn State University after earning an 11-4 triumph on Saturday afternoon at Coleman Field at the USA Baseball Training Complex. The Minutemen scored in all but the fifth and ninth frames, highlighted by a three-run third inning.
 
Mike Gervasi went 3-for-5 on the day to lead UMass, while Drew DeMartino added two hits of his own. Gervasi and DeMartino recorded one double and one triple apiece, both knocking in two RBIs and registering one run each. Dylan Judd scored three runs on the day, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
 
Collin Shapiro opened the scoring for the Minutemen, getting an unearned run off a single from Gervasi. Massachusetts kept its momentum going heading into the next three innings, with a three-run third frame.
 
In the third, Steve Luttazi came home off a Nolan Tichy double, before Judd had an unearned run on a throwing error by Penn State. Tichy touched home plate after a fielding error by the Nittany Lions to make it a 6-0 contest. Penn State added a tally on the board in the bottom of the third, but UMass pushed further ahead with one more run in the fourth.
 
After a scoreless fifth inning, UMass DeMartino extended the Minutemen's lead to 8-1 in the sixth, before Cole Hebble and Shapiro pulled Massachusetts further ahead, 10-1, in the seventh. Judd notched his third run of the afternoon with the lone run in the eighth.
 
Penn State scored three more in the bottom of the final frame, but the Minutemen were able to close out the game and finish with a total of 11-4.
 
Jack Steele (1-1) picked up the win for Massachusetts, allowing five hits, one run, two walks and striking out four in five innings of work. Zack Given came in to close out the game, going four innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking two and recording three strikeouts. Tommy Molsky of Penn State had the loss, working 3.2 inning, allowing six hits, seven runs, three walks and striking out six.
 
Massachusetts and Penn State will wrap up the three-game series in Cary, North Carolina, at the USA Baseball Training Complex on Sunday, March 13 at 11 a.m.
