Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball team heads to Cary, North Carolina, for a three-game series against Penn State University at the USA Baseball Training Complex. The Minutemen and Nittany Lions square off on Friday, March 11 through Sunday, March 13.

The weekend matchup will be streamed on USA Baseball, beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. The first pitch on Saturday is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday's contest will start at 11 a.m.

Recap in a Minute
UMass faced Northeastern on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Mass. The two teams tied, 1-1, as the game was called to an end due to darkness.

The Minutemen and Huskies completed four innings scoreless, before Northeastern got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The Huskies' Luke Beckenstein had an unearned run, coming home off an error with two outs.

As the next three frames remained quiet, Massachusetts scored late in the ninth. Michael Rounds reached first base on a fielder's choice, before stealing second. After Aidan Wilde walked, Kevin Skagerlind reached his bas on an error, advancing Rounds into scoring position and Wilde to second. Collin Shapiro walked during his at bat, sending Rounds to home.

The Huskies were at two outs in the bottom of the final frame, before the game to an end.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.

 All-Time vs. Penn State
The Minutemen and Nittany Lions will meet for the fourth time in program history, as UMass leads the all-time series, 2-1. Massachusetts and Penn State first met in a weekend series during the 1985 season as Atlantic 10 rivals, where Penn State took the game, 22-12. The two programs last met on May 10, 1991, as the Minutemen won 4-3 at a neutral site in the A-10 Tournament.

It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied five homeruns in the first three games, from four Minutemen. Steve Luttazi leads the team with two followed by Mike Gervasi, Hebble, and Tichy with one each. Luttazi had a stellar first game with two homeruns including a grand slam, and Gervasi was the only homerun in the team's second meeting with Georgetown.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
