Minutewomen Bounce Back with 17-11 Victory Over Vermont

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (2-1) had five players with multiple goals as the Minutewomen downed Vermont (2-1), 17-11 at Garber Field on Wednesday afternoon. The win improved Massachusetts to 2-1 overall, while the Catamounts, who came into the contest at 2-0, dipped to 2-1 on the season.
Olivia Muscella and Kendra Harbinger led Massachusetts with a 5-points, each tallying four goals and one assist. Kelly Marra contributed four points on four goals as well. Alex Finn, and Fiona McGowan notched two goals apiece, while senior defender Brinley Anderson tabbed one goal in the effort.
Harbinger's four goals noted her second hat-trick of the year as she, Muscella, Finn become the only Minutewomen to score in all three contests this season. Audra Tosone led the defensive effort with five draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls in the contest. Eight other Minutewomen caused Catamount turnovers.
Ava Vasile led Vermont with four points on three goals and one assist. Claire Adelhelm was the only other Vermont player to contribute multiple goals, while Taylor Mullen, Grace Giancola, Maris Large, Kerry Gerety, Riley Halloran, and Ciera Licare contributed goals for the visitors.
After Alex Finn took the early lead for UMass at 13:24, Vermont scored three unanswered goals to take the two-goal lead midway through the first stanza. Three straight goals from the Minutewomen gave UMass their first lead since Finn's goal in the final minute of the quarter.
Licare tied it up for Vermont to start the second quarter, but it would be the last time in the contest that the score would be tied. Five unanswered goals from Massachusetts sent them into the break with the 9-4 advantage.
The Catamounts pulled within three goals of the hosts at the 8:08 mark in the third quarter, but Harbinger, Muscella, and Marra found the net over the next five minutes to bring the Massachusetts lead back to six goals.
Kelly Gerety scored the final goal for Vermont with 11:43 left in the fourth, before Marra and Harbinger sealed the 17-11 victory.
UMass held the 32-23 advantage in shots, putting 26 on goal, while going 17-18 in clear attempts.
UMass continues its season, hosting Boston University on Sat., February 26 for a 1 p.m. first draw with the Terriers.
