Hughes Named Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player Of The Year

Hughes becomes the first Minuteman to win the league’s major offensive award since 2002.

AMHERST, Mass. Alec Hughes became the first Minuteman to be named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year since Jeff Deren in 2002 as he was named the co-winner of the award by the league on Tuesday morning. Hughes also was named first-team all-conference after leading the league in goals this season with 10.
 
Hughes is the first player in program history to earn both the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and A-10 Rookie of the Year honors during their UMass career. In addition to leading the league in goals, Hughes also recorded a league-best 22 points and ranked inside the top-20 nationally in the regular season in both goals and points. The forward recorded three multi-goal games, including the first UMass hat trick since 2015 in a 4-1 win at George Washington. Hughes scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds left in a 2-1 win over Dayton to secure an A-10 postseason berth for the Minutemen.
 
Aidan Kelly earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team after logging 1,365 minutes and 16 starts for the UMass back line during his freshman campaign. Kelly helped the Minuteman defense hold opponents to a tied for league-best 0.75 goals against in conference play. The defender added assists in road wins at George Washington and Dartmouth.
 
The Minutemen landed three student-athletes on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team in Matt Fordham, Evan Fournier, and Nick Zielonka. Fordham logged a team-high 1519 minutes during the regular season for the UMass back line, starting all 17 games while helping the team to three shutouts and a tied for league-best 0.75 goals against average in A-10 games. Fournier finished his senior campaign with a team-high five assists and three goals for 11 points and scored and assisted in a draw at Fordham. Zielonka ranked second on the team in goals with six and points with 15, including three goals in league play while scoring and assisting in the win over Dayton.
