Women’s Basketball Takes Down Central Connecticut State, 72-57, In Season Opener

Breen matched a career best in points with 31 on the evening.
AMHERST, Mass. – Graduate student Sam Breen matched her career-high 31 points to aid the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to a 72-57 victory over Central Connecticut State on Monday evening at the Mullins Center.
Destiney Philoxy reached double figures with 15 points of her own, while Sydney Taylor notched nine. Breen and Makennah White led the Minutewomen in rebounds with eight apiece, followed by Taylor and Ber'Nyah Mayo with five each. Taylor registered a team-high seven assists, tying her career best.
UMass scored the first six points of the contest. Breen and Philoxy connected early and often around the rim, tallying six-points each at the end of the first quarter. The Minutewomen and the Blue Devils completed the first quarter at a 19-19 draw.
Massachusetts continued its small 5-0 run into the second quarter, before CCSU scored at the 4:10 mark. The Minutewomen and Blue Devils kept the game close late in the quarter, as CCSU made a three-pointer with 1:01 left on the clock. Mayo answered with a good jumper to tie the contest up at 28-28 heading into halftime.
A triple from Taylor at 8:19 in the third helped UMass to a 33-31 lead, that the Minutewomen kept throughout the remainder of the contest, as Massachusetts scored 18 more points to end the quarter with a 51-41 lead. Breen notched 10 points in the final frame with Philoxy adding six to give UMass a 72-57 win.
The Minutewomen travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, to take on No. 5 Tennessee on Thursday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m. on SECN+.
