Women’s Basketball Falls To #5 Tennessee, 74-65

Four Minutewomen reach doubles figures, led by Breen.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to No. 5-ranked University of Tennessee, 74-65, on Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena. Four Minutewomen reached double figures, led by graduate student Sam Breen with 18 points.
Breen tallied her first double-double of the season, and the 41st of her career, coming down with 12 rebounds to go with her point total. In addition to Breen, Ber'Nyah Mayo, Sydney Taylor and Destiney Philoxy recorded 15, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Mayo recorded a team-high four assists, while Taylor had a total of three swipes. UMass outrebounded the Lady Volunteers, 49-45, and had the advantage in second chance points, 16-12.
Massachusetts jumped to an early 6-3 lead to open the first quarter, before Taylor knocked down a three-pointer that pushed the Minutewomen ahead, 9-5. After a 9-9 tie at the 4:38 mark, Tennessee pulled ahead 13-9. The Lady Vols made four free throws to give them a 17-13 advantage, but a layup by Angelique Ngalakulondi put UMass within two heading into the second quarter.
Mayo knotted up the contest at 17 apiece with a jumper at the 9:05 mark of the second. Tennessee took the lead with back-to-back baskets and added two triples to make it a 27-19 game. Breen answered with a three-pointer of her own to bring UMass back within five. At the 2:34 mark, Breen drained another triple to make it a 31-27 contest, with Tennessee in the lead. A made free throw by Taylor put UMass behind by three, before a Lady Vols triple extended their lead to 34-28. Philoxy took a shot from the charity stripe with two seconds left in the first half to close the gap to five.
A triple from Philoxy late in the third quarter put the Minutewomen within four points, as Tennessee led 40-36 at the 6:19 mark. The Lady Vols went on a 14-4 run to extend their lead to 54-40. In the final frame, Massachusetts climbed back within six late in the quarter with Tennessee holding a 68-62 advantage with 56 seconds left on the clock. Philoxy had a steal and drained a shot from beyond the arc to make it a five point game, but the Lady Vols grabbed nine more points, bringing the contest to its final score of 74-65.
UMass returns to the Mullins Center on Monday, November 14, to take on Maine for Military Appreciation Night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., on NESN/ESPN+.
