Taylor Fuels Women’s Basketball To 71-53 Victory Over UMass Lowell

Taylor eclipses 1,000 career point to become the 23rd Minutewomen to join the 1,000-point club.

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Sydney Taylor tallied a game-high 25 points, including 12 points alone from beyond the arc, to spark the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team in a 71-53 victory over UMass Lowell at the Costello Athletics Center on Tuesday night. Taylor also hit a milestone, as she recorded her 1,000th career point early in the first quarter.
 
Taylor became the 23rd Minutewomen in program history to achieve the feat and is 22nd on the career points list with 1,019 points.
 
Taylor went 4-for-7 (.571) from beyond the arc and registered 14 points alone in the first half. Makennah White followed close behind with 16 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and knocking down her first career three-pointer. White also registered 14 of her 16 points in the second half. Destiney Philoxy finished in double figures with 13 points of her own. Philoxy led the team with seven assists, while Sam Breen earned a game-high 11 rebounds. In the first quarter, Taylor and Breen combined for all 16 points for the Minutewomen.
 
Massachusetts shot 25-for-29 (.424) from the field, including six-of-13 (.462) from the three-point line, and was 88.2 percent from the charity stripe, sinking 15-of-17 free throw attempts. The Minutewomen outrebounded the River Hawks, 39-31, while outscoring UMass Lowell in points in the paint (36-30), second chance points (11-9) and bench points (16-12).
 
After UMass Lowell got the first two points of the night, Taylor answered back with a three-pointer, before knocking down her second triple to score her 1,000th career point and giving the Minutewomen a 6-2 lead. The River Hawks made it a two-point contest, but Breen made UMass' third three-pointer of the game to push to a 9-4 lead. Breen added two layups, while Taylor drained her third triple to combine for seven points to give Massachusetts the 16-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
Philoxy opened the scoring in the second frame with a layup, before coming up with a steal and driving to the rack with an open lane for back-to-back baskets, extending the Minutewomen's lead to 20-12. Taylor tallied three points on a layup and free throw for a 23-12 lead, but UMass Lowell went on an 11-3 run closed the gap, with Massachusetts leading by three at 26-23. Philoxy and Taylor added two shots from the charity stripe each to help maintain the team's lead at 30-26 at the end of the first half.
 
The Minutewomen kept the momentum going in the third, maintaining a 47-33 lead with 3:19 left on the clock, thanks to a 17-7 run. With only 48 seconds left, Taylor grabbed her 19th point of the contest to give UMass a 14-point lead at 49-35, heading into the final frame.
 
A small 6-2 run brought the score to 55-37 in the fourth, with UMass holding the advantage, before a 14-5 run gave the Minutewomen a 24-point lead, the largest of the night, with a score of 69-45. The River Hawks notched eight more points, but Massachusetts held on, bringing the game to a close with its final score of 71-53.
 
UMass heads to Miami, Florida, for the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Nov. 27. UMass matches up against Drake on Friday at 2 p.m., before taking on the either FIU or Howard at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
