Women’s Basketball Earns Fourth Straight In 100-83 Overtime Victory Over Drake

The Minutewomen record 17-0 run in overtime to achieve first 100-point contest since Dec. 7, 2017.
MIAMI, Fla. – A late surge in the second half allowed the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to force overtime, coming out on top with a 100-83 victory over Drake University at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Friday afternoon for its fourth straight win. After a 5-0 run to end regulation, The Minutewomen continued with a 17-0 run in overtime to score 100 points, marking the first 100-point contest for the program since December 7, 2017 (Fisher College – W, 121-38).
Five Minutewomen reached double figures, led by Sydney Taylor with a game-high 29 points, as the senior went 11-for-22 (.500) from the field, including matching a career best six made three-pointers. Destiney Philoxy followed with 20 points, while Sam Breen and Ber'Nyah Mayo tallied 19 points apiece. Angelique Ngalakulondi recorded her second double-double of the season, and eighth of her career, after totaling 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Mayo sat atop the leaderboard with six assists and five steals on the day.
UMass went 8-for-20 (.400) from beyond the arc, while making 16-of-18 (.889) free throws. The team outrebounded Drake 39-37, while outscoring the Bulldogs 54-42 in points in the paint, 34-16 in points off turnovers and 21-5 in second chance points.
Drake opened the scoring at the 9:33 mark, but Mayo responded with a three-pointer only 23 seconds later to give UMass a 3-2 lead. The Minutewomen went on a 10-2 run that lasted two minutes and 50 seconds, to extend the lead to 10-4. Another 13-6 run for Massachusetts, brought the contest to 23-13 with a made triple from Taylor. Drake tallied four more points, but UMass held on to 23-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs continued their run into the second, going 20-6, closing the gap to only four points with the Minutewomen leading 29-25. Two good layups from both Ngalakulondi and Mayo pulled Massachusetts ahead 33-25, but a 7-0 run for Drake made it a one-point game. After the teams traded two points apiece, Drake took a 37-35 lead at the 3:21 mark. The Bulldogs registered nine more points to UMass' three to close out the first half, with Drake leading 43-38.
In the third, UMass closed the gap to two with the score at 46-44 in favor of Drake, before a 10-4 Bulldogs run extended their lead to 56-50. Massachusetts and Drake traded a pair of free throws to make it 58-52, but back-to-back triples and a layup gave Drake a 10-point lead at 66-56.
Drake jumped out to a 77-68 lead in the fourth quarter, before a three-pointer from Taylor and four made shots from the charity stripe by Mayo brought UMass back within two at 77-75. With an 83-78 lead for the Bulldogs, the Minutewomen tallied five consecutive points in the final minute of the frame to force the first overtime game of the season.
Massachusetts continued its run into the overtime period, marking a 22-0 run, and holding Drake scoreless and bringing the final tally to 100-83 to defeat the Bulldogs.
