Five Minutewomen Reach Double Figures As Women’s Basketball Tops Maine, 67-54

The Minutewomen achieved its longest run of the season, while holding the Black Bears scoreless in the second quarter.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team topped the University of Maine, 67-54, on Monday night at the Mullins Center, reaching a 31-0 run, its largest of the season and holding their opponent scoreless in the second quarter. In addition, five Minutewomen reached double figures, led by senior Sydney Taylor with 18 points.
Following Taylor, Angelique Ngalakulondi recorded 12 points on the night, as Sam Breen, Ber'Nyah Mayo and Makennah White tallied 11 points apiece. Ngalakulondi and Breen earned double-doubles, marking the first of the season for Ngalakulondi and second for Breen, with the teammates coming down with a team-high 10 boards each. Breen also led the team in assists with a career best eight, while Destiney Philoxy registered a team best four steals, matching a career-high.
As a team, Massachusetts outrebounded Maine, 50-28, while also tallying 50 points in the paint, 18 second chance points and 17 fast break points.
After the two teams traded a pair of points, Massachusetts went on 7-0 run to pull ahead, 11-4, in the opening quarter. Maine was able to close the gap, but UMass maintained a 15-12 lead at the end of the first. The Minutewomen extended their lead in the second quarter with a layup from Ngalakulondi making it a 17-12 contest. Massachusetts held the Black Bears without a basket in the second, going on a 24-0 run to enter halftime with a 39-12 advantage.
The Minutewomen continued its run heading into the third, 31-0, the largest of the season, before the Black Bears scored a basket at the 7:37 mark. Maine was able to grab 18 points to UMass' 15, but the Minutewomen held on to a 54-30 lead. The Black Bears scored the majority of their points in the final frame, outscoring UMass 24-13, but Massachusetts remained ahead and came out on top, 67-54.
UMass hits the road for an in-state match up with Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., on Friday, November 18 at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
