Women’s Basketball Pushes Past Assumption, 77-57, In Exhibition

The Minutewomen host Central Connecticut State on November 7 to open the regular season at the Mullins Center.
AMHERST, Mass. – Graduate student Sam Breen and senior Sydney Taylor led the way with 29 and 21 points, respectively, in the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team's 77-57 victory over Assumption College on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition contest at the Mullins Center.
Breen recorded a double-double on the day after coming down with a team-high 15 rebounds to go along with her point total, while Taylor dished out a team best six assists, adding five rebounds of her own. Breen totaled three steals, and Taylor and Laila Fair tallied two.
For Assumption, Monica Spain registered a team-high 11 points, while Marina Callahan had a team best nine rebounds. Molly Stokes led the Greyhounds in assists with three.
UMass jumped to an early 9-3 lead after the first three-pointer of the day from Taylor. Another triple from Taylor gave the Minutewomen a 12-7 lead, before Massachusetts added four more points to end the first quarter ahead 18-8. In the second quarter, UMass maintained a steady lead putting up 16 points to enter halftime with a 34-23 advantage. In the third quarter, Breen put up 10 points to aid the Minutewomen to a 57-37 lead. During the final frame, Taylor (seven points) and Breen (six points) combined for 13 points, helping UMass to its 77-57 victory.
