Murray Named To Richter Award Watch List

UMass’ all-time wins leader is among 28 candidates for the 2022 honor.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts graduate student netminder Matt Murray is among 28 candidates named to the watch list for the 2022 Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men's NCAA Division I hockey since 2014.
Murray is one of seven Hockey East goaltenders from Hockey East on the list and is the lone candidate from Alberta. He has started all 18 games this season thus far for the Minutemen, posting a 10-6-2 record with two shutouts, a 2.30 goals against average and a .926 save percentage over 1094:47 in net. Murray currently ranks ninth nationally in saves (524), 10th in save percentage and 20th in GAA.
In his career, the St. Albert, Alberta native has appeared in 103 games over four-plus seasons and holds a 2.22 GAA and a .918 save percentage with 2,464 career stops. Murray is UMass' all-time leader in wins (62) and shutouts (13) and set the program's single season wins record with 20 in 2018-19.
In 2020-21 Murray finished 11th nationally in goals against average (1.97), eighth in winning percentage (.714, 10-4-0) and tied for eighth in shutouts (3), while holding a .917 save percentage. He capped his 2020-21 campaign with a 36-save performance against Minnesota Duluth in the National Semifinal, sending the Minutemen to the National Championship game with the 3-2 overtime victory over the Bulldogs.
A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare this list down to approximately 15 names within the next two weeks and then ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in April during the Frozen Four.
