Women's Basketball Tripped Up By Rhode Island, 66-58

January 17, 2022 | Women's Basketball

Breen recorded her 10th double-double and 33rd of her career.

KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell short to University of Rhode Island, 66-58, on Monday night at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.

UMass moves to 15-3 on the season, still holding the best starting record in program history, including 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 conference.

Sam Breen led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds, recording her 10th double-double of the year and 33rd of her career. Destiney Philoxy and Ber'Nyah Mayo also finished with 10-plus points, collecting 11 and 10, respectively. Philoxy earned a team-high five assists, while Breen swiped the ball a game-high four times. Angelique Ngalakulondi tallied a team best three blocks.

The Minutewomen edged out the Rams in points in the paint, 32-30, second chance points, 12-10, and fast break points, 13-8. UMass shot 60.0 percent from the free throw line.

Rhode Island jumped out to an early 4-0 run, before a Ngalakulondi jumper and a layup from Breen tied the game up. The Rams pulled ahead on a made three-pointer, 7-4, but Mayo was soon sent to the charity stripe, sinking both baskets to close the gap to one. After another triple from URI to bring the score to 10-6, Breen made her jumper to bring UMass back within two. A 12-0 run for Rhode Island, though, closed out the first quarter with the Rams ahead 24-8.

In the second quarter, URI continued its run, going 14-0, but Taylor drained a three to break Massachusetts' scoring drought. UMass totaled 11 more points in the quarter, holding URI to only eight more. Breen earned four of the 11 points for the Minutewomen, with Taylor tallying three, helping the score to 38-22, in favor of URI, to end the half.

Breen opened the third for UMass with a shot from behind the arc, to add to the team's point total. A 14-5 run that elapsed five minutes and three seconds for the Minutewomen helped cut the deficit to five, with the score at 41-47.  Breen made her second three in the run, as Philoxy and Mayo also contributed four and three points, respectively.

UMass started the final frame with a 5-0 run, bringing the score to 50-46, with URI holding on to its lead. The Mintuewomen got back within two points thanks to a another run due to a combined total of three made free throws from Breen and Philoxy and a layup from Makennah White. It was not enough, though, as Rhode Island tallied four points, all from the charity stripe to bring the game to its final total, 66-58.
