Women's Basketball Falls To Dayton, 69-60

Breen and Philoxy led UMass with 19 points apiece.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell, 69-60, to the University of Dayton on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
UMass moves to 14-4 on the season and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Dayton improves to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Sam Breen and Destiney Philoxy led UMass with 19 points apiece, while Breen registered 12 rebounds. Breen earned her third straight double-double in as many games, 11th of the season and 34th of her career. The duo also contributed five assists each. Ber'Nyah Mayo came away with three steals, as Philoxy and Sydney Taylor both tallied two.
The Minutewomen shot 77.8 percent from the free throw line, making 14 of 18 attempts, with Philoxy making all eight of her baskets. Massachusetts and Dayton both had 16 turnovers on the night.
Two early ties started the first quarter, getting out to a 4-4 draw at the 6:06 mark. Dayton made a layup that pushed them ahead, before Breen tied it up once more, sinking both of her shots from the charity stripe. Another layup by the Flyers pulled them ahead by two, but Makennah White made her jumper to knot it up at 8-8. Five more points for Dayton extended its lead to 13-8 to close out the quarter.
The Flyers got to a 17-11 lead in the first minute and 39 seconds, before going on a 9-2 run that lasted four minutes and 36 seconds to pull ahead, 26-13. Michelle Pruitt scored three more points for UMass, as Breen and Philoxy grabbed two apiece for the team for a total of seven, while Dayton collected five more to end the half at 31-20.
UMass opened the third quarter with a three minute 9-2 run that cut the deficit to four, with the Flyers ahead 33-29. A 7-0 run for Dayton pushed the team to a 40-29 lead. Stefanie Kulesza sank a three-pointer, but Dayton answered back with a triple of their own to bring the score to 45-34. A pair of free throws for Philoxy added to UMass' point total along with two jumpers from both Mayo and Philoxy.
With the score at 53-40 entering the final frame, an 11-2 run saw the Minutewomen close the gap to six with a score of 57-51, in the favor of the Flyers. Dayton was able to pull away with a 6-2 run of its own, making it a 10-point contest at 63-53. In the final 17 seconds, UMass tallied four more points to Dayton's two, ending the game with the final score of 69-60.
Massachusetts makes a trip to Washington, D.C., on Saturday, January 22, to face George Washington at 2 p.m. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
