No. 22 UMass Tops Davidson, 14-7, Advances To A-10 Title Game
April 30, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
The Minutewomen have now reached the conference championship game in 13 straight seasons
AMHERST, Mass. – Led by eight saves from goalkeeper Lauren Hiller, the No. 22 Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (14-2) put on one of its strongest defensive efforts of the season, holding Davidson (11-4) to just two second half goals as the Minutewomen topped the Wildcats in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals on Friday afternoon at Garber Field, 14-7.
With the win, UMass advances to the A-10 championship game for the 13th straight season, which will be held on Sunday at Garber Field against Saint Joseph's (12 p.m., ESPN+).
Massachusetts has now won 13 consecutive games dating back to March 7, tied for the fifth longest winning streak in program history.
The Minutewomen defense forced Davidson into 22 turnovers on the day, with Courtney Barrett leading the way with four caused turnovers while Brinley Anderson added two caused turnovers and a game-high seven ground balls.
The defense led to offense at the other end as Massachusetts received goals from seven different players including three apiece from A-10 First Team selections Kaitlyn Cerasi and Stephanie Croke. Maddy Moloney, Kelly Marra and Olivia Muscella also added multi-goal efforts.
Davidson was in the game for most of the afternoon thanks to 14 saves from Amanda Monahan and 10 draw controls from Julianne Carey, who battled UMass on the draw all game long.
It was a back-and-forth opening half with neither squad leading by more than two goals through the opening 20 minutes before a late UMass run extended the advantage to four at the break. The Minutewomen took advantage of a pair of first half yellow cards on the Wildcats to bury two man-up goals from Croke and Cerasi during the opening half.
From there it was all UMass, scoring four straight to open the second half with strikes from Croke, Cerasi, Moloney and Muscella to extend the lead to 13-5 midway through the final half, while the Massachusetts defense did the job on the other end limiting the Wildcats to two goals and just six shots over the final 30 minutes.
