CHAMPIONS! No. 22 UMass Runs Past SJU, 18-7, To Capture A-10 Title

May 02, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse

Kaitlyn Cerasi was named the Most Outstanding Player after a 10-point weekend

AMHERST, Mass. – For the 11th time in program history, and first time since 2017, the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team are the champions of the Atlantic 10. Behind seven points (four goals, three assists) from A-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player Kaitlyn Cerasi, along with six saves from Lauren Hiller, the Minutewomen used a 15-3 run to close the game and did the job on defense for the second straight game to capture the conference championship on Sunday at Garber Field, 18-7.

With the win, Massachusetts secures the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, UMass' 13th trip to the national tournament in team history. The Minutewomen will learn their opponent when the NCAA announces the tournament field on Sunday, May 9 at 9 p.m. (ET) on NCAA.com.

Cerasi, who finished the tournament with seven goals and three assists, was one of six Minutewomen selected to the A-10 All-Tournament Team. She was joined by Hiller, Haley Connaughton, Stephanie Croke, Olivia Muscella and Caitlyn Petro.

Cerasi was dominant all afternoon for Massachusetts, and became the program's all-time leader in career assists (144). Her four goals on the day moved her into sole possession of fourth on UMass' career goals list.

The offense was sparked by 16 draw controls from Petro, who become the UMass' single-season record holder for draw control wins (220), passing current assistant coach Hannah Murphy. Petro is also five away from setting the NCAA single-season record.

It was a back and forth start to the afternoon with score tied at four through the first 16 minutes after the Hawks used a three-goal from with strikes from Riley Delaney, Stephanie Kelly and Sophia Kolkka. From there it was all UMass, though, with the Minutewomen going on a seven-goal run to retake the lead and never look back, heading into halftime with a 10-5 advantage.

It was more of the same in the second half as Massachusetts opened on a 6-0 with goals from six different players to balloon its cushion up to 16-5 and run the clock for the rest of regulation.

The win extends the Massachusetts winning streak to 14 games, the fifth longest winning streak in program history.
