Minutemen Close Weekend Series at Rhode Island

April 24, 2021 | Baseball

Massachusetts led late in game two but could not answer a Rhody rally

KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts baseball was downed by Rhode Island in the teams' doubleheader on Saturday at Bill Beck Field.

Catcher Dylan Judd was a combined 3-for-6 between the two games, extending his career-long hitting streak to nine straight games. In addition first baseman Steve Luttazi was 3-for-6 across the doubleheader with a combined five RBI.

Massachusetts is scheduled to play next in a 3 p.m. game at Sacred Heart on Tues., April 27.

Game 1
Rhode Island 7, Massachusetts 3 (7 innings)
Steve Luttazi clubbed a two-run home run for his second long ball of the season, and DH Mike Gervasi doubled, but the Minutemen were unable to bounce back from a five-run third inning for URI.

Massachusetts was first to the scoreboard in the second inning, putting aboard the first three batters of the frame. Gervasi's leadoff double followed up by a Michael Rounds single put runners on the corners, then Luttazi walked to load the bases. Josh Petrucci came to the plate after Chris Pearsons struck out, sending the first pitch Petrucci saw into right field and bringing Gervasi 90 feet to the plate.

Rhody would pull in front with two in the bottom of the inning, then add insurance with a five-spot in the last of the third.

Mike Webb tossed a seven-inning complete game for Rhody for the win, and the loss went to starter Tyler Dalton. Max LeBlanc dealt the final three innings for the Minutemen and held URI to just one hit in that span.

Game 2
Rhode Island 10, Massachusetts 7
UMass once again struck first, taking a 1-0 first inning lead on a sacrifice fly from Eddy Hart to score left fielder Collin Shapiro. Shapiro led off the game with a single up the middle, moving up to third on a ground out and a wild pitch.

URI would tie the score at one in the bottom of the first and go ahead with two in the second.

In the sixth inning the Minutemen got one back, then regained the lead with aa five-spot in the seventh sending nine to bat. A bases-loaded walk by Hart scored center fielder Ryan Coleman, then three batters later Luttazi smacked a two-run single to right scoring right fielder Kevin Skagerlind and Shapiro. Third baseman Aidan Wilde was next up and used a two-run double to plate Hart and Luttazi.

That gave the Minutemen a 7-3 advantage at stretch time, but URI countered with a six-spot in the bottom half and added another run in the eighth, taking a 10-7 lead into the final frame.

Hart led off the ninth with a ground-rule double and scored on Judd's base hit, but Trystan Levesque retired the next three Minutemen in order to close out the ballgame.

Levesque was the winning pitcher and Zack Given took the loss for the Maroon and White.
