Massachusetts Outlasts Sacred Heart, 8-6

April 27, 2021 | Baseball

Luttazi homered for the Minutemen in an 11-inning victory

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball defeated Sacred Heart, 8-6, on Tuesday in 11 innings. Left fielder Collin Shapiro had a pair of hits out of the leadoff spot and scored a run, as did Eddy Hart, who moved over to shortstop for the day. Hart also knocked in Shapiro on a 10th-inning single.

Catcher Mike Gervasi drove in a pair and scored twice, and first baseman Steve Luttazi's two RBI included a solo home run, his third of the season.

Massachusetts held an early 4-0 lead after the first inning, sending all nine batters to the dish. Gervasi's two-run double scored DH Dylan Judd and center fielder Kevin Skagerlind, then Judd came around on a single from Michael Rounds. Gervasi capped the scoring for the inning, crossing the plate on a groundout by Luttazi.

Sacred Heart got one back on a wild pitch in the bottom half and the Minutemen pushed the lead back to four on Luttazi's dinger in the fourth inning. The Pioneers would battle back with two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the eighth, leveling the score at five-all.

Shapiro, placed on second base to begin extra innings, came in on Hart's one-out single but SHU answered with a sac fly to tie the score once again in the last of the 10th. UMass put it away though in the 11th, plating Gervasi on an Aidan Wilde single and a sac fly from Josh Petrucci that brought in Ryan Coleman with an insurance run.

From there, Tucker Wittman escaped unharmed with the Pioneers runner placed on second for the bottom half of the 11th, retiring all three batters in order. Wittman collected the win for working the final two innings, allowing one unearned run (the inherited runner in the 10th).

Judd had a career-long nine-game hitting streak come to an end, but with a first-inning walk he extended his reached base streak to 10 straight contests.

Massachusetts resumes Atlantic 10 Conference play on Fri., April 30 opening a four-game weekend set at Fordham.
