Seniors Lead Massachusetts Past Duquesne, 21-10

April 18, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – Stephanie Croke (eight points) and Kaitlyn Cerasi (seven goals) led the charge offensively, while Caitlyn Petro set a UMass single-game record for draw controls (21) and Lauren Hiller made five saves as the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (11-2, 6-0) used a big second half to run past Duquesne (4-3, 3-3).

The win extends the Massachusetts streak to 10 straight games, the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Minutewomen have won at least 10 consecutive games.

Croke and Cerasi were on a mission throughout the afternoon, with Croke finishing with five goals, three assists, five ground balls and two caused turnovers while Cerasi added five goals of her own along with two assists and four ground balls.

Petro, meanwhile, who set the single-game record earlier this season at the draw, rewrote it again on Sunday with 21 draws to give Massachusetts possession for most of the day. Petro also added one assist and caused one turnover.

On the nation's top offenses showed up yet again as the Minutewomen scored more than 20 goals for the sixth time in 13 games, and fourth time in the last five outings. Haley Connaughton (two goals, four assists), Kelly Marra (two goals, four ground balls), Hannah Heller (two goals, two caused turnovers) and Fiona McGowan (two goals, three assists) all joined Croke and Cerasi with multi-goal afternoons.

Both teams got off to a slow start with each squad turning the ball over more than 10 time in the opening 30 minutes, leading to a fairly even first half with UMass ahead, 9-5. But the offense came out of the break on fire with five straight to take a commanding 14-5 lead, including a pair of goals from Marra in the run.

A goal from Carlee Braverman (four goals) briefly halted UMass, but the Minutewomen responded right back with each of the next four strikes to increase its lead up to 10 to run the clock for nearly the rest of regulation.

UMass outshot the Dukes 48-23 in the game, (29-15 shots on goal), and took control on the draw 23-9.

Following the game, UMass honored its 2021 Senior Class: Cerasi, Croke, Hiller, Petro, Emma Dotsikas, Audrey Fantazzia and Nikki Torres. During their careers, the group has 61 victories, three Atlantic 10 regular season titles, the 2017 Atlantic 10 Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament 2nd Round appearance.

UMass will return to action on Friday afternoon when the Minutewomen host St. Bonaventure at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
