April 23, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
AMHERST, Mass. - No. 24 nationally ranked University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse downed visiting St. Bonaventure, 27-2 at Richard F. Garber Field on Friday afternoon. The win improved Massachusetts to 12-2 overall and kept the Minutewomen undefeated in Atlantic 10 play at 7-0. The Bonnies dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-8 in league action with the loss.
The 27 goals scored marked the most in a single game in program history while the margin of victory (25) was the largest as well. Fourteen different players contributed on the offensive end.
Alex Finn led the team with six points on two goals and four assists. Five Minutewomen added four points each: Kylee Bowen (four goals), Kaitlyn Cerasi (one goals, three assists), Haley Connaughton (two goals, two assists), Olivia Muscella (three goals, one assist) and Julia Smith (one goal, three assists).
Caitlyn Petro set a single-game career best with 24 draw controls, including 17 won in the opening half alone. It was her third game of the season with 20 or more draw controls and second consecutive game with at least as many. Her 180 draw controls so far this season are second all-time, behind only the 212 that now-assistant coach Hannah Murphy won in 2017. Petro is already the program record-holder for most draw controls (354) after she surpassed Murphy's 310 earlier this spring.
Massachusetts led, 18-1, at halftime thanks to Petro's draw control dominance and 11 different scorers. Kelly Marra paved the way on the offensive end with a hat trick on only four shots while Connoughton, Stephanie Croke, Fiona McGowan and Muscella scored twice each.
The Minutewomen scored the opening seven goals, including two from Muscella, before the Bonnies found the back of the net. Massachusetts then scored 14 times consecutively and built a 21-1 advantage midway through the second half.
The Maroon and White led in shots, 46-9 and shots on goal, 39-5. Massachusetts also held a 21-15 advantage in groundballs and a 28-2 lead in draw controls. The Minutewomen successfully completed 13-of-14 clears while the Bonnies went 10-for-18 in the category.
Massachusetts wraps up its regular season with a trip to Saint Joseph's on Sun., April 25. First draw is set for Noon.
