ST LOUIS – Making its second straight appearance in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals, the Massachusetts women's soccer team will look to advance to the conference title game for the first time since 2011 when UMass takes on Davidson at 5 p.m. on Thursday on ESPN+.
UMass is the No. 2 seed in the four-team conference tournament. No. 1 seed and host Saint Louis will battle No. 4 seed Dayton in the first semifinal at 1 p.m. (ET).
UMass in the Atlantic 10 Championship
UMass is making its 17th appearance in the conference tournament in team history. The Minutewomen are 12-12-1 all-time in A-10 postseason play, and has won the league championship four times (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997).
The Minutewomen are making their 12th appearance in the conference semifinal match, and first since 2013. UMass is 6-5 all-time in semifinal action, and looking to return to the A-10 title game for the first time since 2011.
UMass and George Washington are meeting in the first time in Atlantic 10 postseason play. The Minutewomen hold a 4-1-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Wildcats, including a 1-0 victory last season on Rudd Field.
Four Minutewomen earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors
With just one day until Massachusetts takes the field for the Atlantic 10 Semifinals, four members of the program earned conference accolades from the A-10 on Thursday. Jenny Hipp was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team for the third straight season, Dani Sclafani picked up both Second Team and All-Academic honors, and Hannah Peric and Ella Curry were both selected to the league's All-Rookie Team.
Cardiac kids
UMass has had a flair for the dramatic in recent weeks, netting the game-winning goal in the 90th minute at La Salle on Mar. 14 off the foot of Hannah Peric before Lauren Bonavita gave the Minutewomen their first double overtime victory since 2015 with the game-winning strike in the 106th minute at Fordham on Mar. 21.
Last week, Jenny Hipp scored the game winning goal in the 82nd minute against Saint Joseph's to lift UMass to a 1-0 victory before Olivia Gouldsbury scored the OT game-winner in the 100th minute at Rhode Island.
Stingy
Alyssa Chase, Bella Mendoza and the UMass defensive corps combined to record its sixth clean sheet of the season and fifth in the last eight games on Sunday. The Minutewomen only allowed four goals in league play this season, and had a shutout streak of 316 minutes at one point during league play. UMass is 45th in the NCAA and second in the Atlantic 10 in shutout percentage (.545) this season.
Last time out
A 77th minute goal from Jenny Hipp proved to be the difference as Massachusetts earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fordham on Sunday at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen defense was the story yet again, helping goalkeepers Alyssa Chase and Bella Mendoza (one save) to its sixth clean sheet of the season and third in the last five games.
Barry and Sclafani named 2020-21 captains
Head coach Jason Dowiak announced on Feb. 8 that seniors Fatou Barry and Dani Sclafani will serve as co-captains for the 2020-21 season.
"Fatou and Dani have displayed great leadership qualities throughout their time at UMass," Dowiak said. "They always display genuine care and concern for their teammates, the coaches, and our support staff. They truly embody our core values of Prepare, Actions, Compete, Serve, and Informed which gives me great confidence in naming them our captains."
