Massachusetts Women’s Soccer Blanks Kent State, 1-0, For Sixth Straight Win

The Minutewomen earned their fourth consecutive clean sheet for the first time since 2015.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer picked up its sixth straight win with a 1-0 victory over Kent State on Saturday morning at Rudd Field. It marks the longest win streak for Massachusetts since the team won eight consecutive games in the 2018 season (August 26 – September 30).
Additionally, UMass earned its fourth straight clean sheet triumph, marking the first time since the 2015 season (Sept. 10-Oct. 1), and its third consecutive shutout in the Mid-American Conference.
The Minutewomen improve to 9-1-0 overall, including 3-0-0 in MAC play, while the Golden Flashes moved to 2-6-2 on the season and 1-2-0 in the league.
Both teams went scoreless in the opening 45 minutes. Massachusetts tallied two shots in the first half, while Kent State totaled one.
At the 50:53 mark of the second half, UMass challenged for a handball inside the box. The Minutewomen won the challenge and were awarded a penalty kick. Amelia Deren converted her fourth penalty kick goal to break the scoring drought for both teams.
UMass held on to its 1-0 lead throughout the rest of the match to earn the fourth shutout, and third among MAC contests.
Kent State held a slight advantage in shots over Massachusetts, 6-5, with both teams being even in shots on goal at two apiece. The Minutewomen held the advantage in corner kicks, taking four to the Golden Flashes one.
Monica Curry led the team in shots with two, followed by Deren and Morgan Bellamy with one each. Curry and Deren each had a shot on goal.
Earning her fifth shutout of the season, and the 12th of her career, Leah Nisenfeld made two saves and allowed no goals in 90 minutes of action.
Leah Shaffer of Kent State stopped one shot and allowed one goal through 90 minutes of play.
