Early Strike Sends Davidson Past UMass In A-10 Semifinal

Bella Mendoza made one save in her A-10 postseason debut
ST. LOUIS – The Massachusetts women's soccer team (6-5-1) carried the play for much of the afternoon in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals, but a goal from Alexandra Menard just 25 seconds into the contest sent Davidson (7-3-3) past the Minutewomen on Thursday at Hermann Stadium, 1-0.
The goal came in the opening minute of the game as the Wildcats controlled the ball along the left side of the pitch before Katherine Smith sent a seemingly innocent ball into the box. But Menard was there waiting, getting body position on a UMass defender before redirecting a header past Massachusetts goalkeeper Bella Mendoza for the 1-0 advantage.
Facing the early deficit, UMass took control from there and dictated the pace of play for most of regulation. The Minutewomen nearly leveled the match at one in the 12th minute when Nissa Pereira sent a ball in from the right side that Ava Jouvenel got a piece of, but Davidson goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch was there to make one of her six total saves on the day.
The pressure continued into the second half with the Minutewomen in search of the equalizer, and almost found it with 30 minutes to play during a scramble in front of the Wildcat net as Barry tried to get a right foot on a bid from in tight, but she couldn't get enough on it to beat Bunch.
UMass would outshot the Wildcats 11-5 on the day (6-2 shots on goal), including a 7-2 advantage in the final 45 minutes highlighted by a bid from Ella Curry late that sailed just over the crossbar.
