Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball returns to the diamond with a seven-inning doubleheader on Sun., March 7 at Stony Brook. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Joe Nathan Field. In addition, the Minutemen have added a Tues., March 9 game at Central Connecticut, which is slated for 2 p.m. from the CCSU Baseball Field.

UMass opened the 2021 campaign this past Wednesday with a game at Northeastern. Despite the setback, the contest marked a return to the field for the Maroon and White, who had last played on March 8, 2020–a span of 360 days between game action.

A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2021 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 138th season. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the abbreviated 2020 campaign, while thirteen players are in their first season in Amherst, including seven freshmen and six transfers. A complete roster is available here.

All-Time vs. Stony Brook
Massachusetts meets Stony Brook for just the second and third time in program history this weekend. In the only prior contest, a 4-3 Minutemen triumph in 2018, Nolan Kessinger went 4-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with two RBIs and a run scored as the Minutemen scored once apiece in the third through sixth innings. Logan Greene also added three hits including a triple, and Justin Lasko fanned seven on the mound over 7.2 innings for the win.

All-Time vs. Central Connecticut
The Minutemen own a 28-10 all-time advantage over Central Connecticut, most recently taking a 1-0, eleven-inning contest in 2019. That day, Greene's one-out fly ball led to a fielding error and allowed Collin Shapiro to come around from second base with the winning run as the Minutemen walked off in the 11th inning. Casey Aubin picked up the win out of the bullpen, tossing the final 2.2 innings of the contest and tying a career-high with seven strikeouts. Jack Steele made his collegiate debut and dealt 2.1 scoreless innings with two Ks. Between Aubin and Steele, UMass pitching did not allow a hit and surrendered just one walk in the final five innings.

Commonwealth Connections
UMass assistant coach Nate Cole was a three-year starter on the mound at Central Connecticut State University. While with the Blue Devils, he was a part of two Northeast Conference championship squads and helped CCSU reach NCAA Regionals in 2004 and 2007. He earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Central Connecticut in 2007.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2021 season marks the 55th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fourth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts is scheduled to play a three-game series at Merrimack from March 12-14.

Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, game dates, times and opponents are subject to change. The best way to remain on top of schedule updates is via the official UMass baseball schedule page, as well as the team's social media accounts (@UMassBaseball).
