Weekend Scenery
Massachusetts prepares for its first split weekend with a road trip to Northeastern on Fri., March 5 at 3 p.m. followed by a home game against Vermont on Sun., March 7 at 2 p.m. The Minutewomen lead both all-time series with a 25-19-3 advantage over Northeastern and a 12-2 lead over Vermont.
The Minutewomen last played Northeastern last season on Oct. 4, 2019, a 2-0 victory for Massachusetts over the then-No. 25 ranked Huskies at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Marlise van Tonder had three saves in the shutout effort while Jess Beech scored the eventual game-winning goal. Massachusetts and Vermont last met in 2018, a 3-1 Minutewoman victory in Burlington. Georgie McTear scored the eventual game-winner and assisted on another UMass tally.
Team Leadership Announced
UMass field hockey elected a four-woman leadership group ahead of the 2021 spring season. The quartet includes team co-captains Sophie Johnson and Georgie McTear, as well as Jess Beech and Emilie Keij. The team elected the captains and leadership group through a player-wide vote.
Returning Firepower
Massachusetts field hockey brings back six of its top seven scorers from a year ago, including Jess Beech, Emily Crawford, Bella Ianni, Katherine Furry, Steph Gottwals and Georgie McTear. Beech paced the returnees with 14 points on six goals and four assists, followed by McTear (4-4-12). Ianni added 10 points through five goals while Furry posted eight via three goals and two assists. Crawford (1-3-5) and Gottwals (1-1-3) round out the half dozen top scorers.
Preseason Poll Results
Massachusetts field hockey earned the No. 3 spot in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll with 48 points total and one first place vote. Saint Joseph's was first with 60 points and six of the eight first place votes while Richmond finished just ahead of UMass with 51 points (one first place vote). VCU (45 points), Lock Haven (32), Davidson (21), La Salle (21) and Saint Louis (10) rounded out the poll.
A Dependable Center "Bach"
Now-sophomore Josie Rossbach started at center back for the Minutewomen during the 2019 season and played a team-high 1,181 minutes of a possible 1,226 during the 20-game season (96.3 percent). Her total time played breaks down to 59 minutes, five seconds per appearance. She is the first Minutewoman to start at center back as a true freshman since Lauren Allymohamed did so in 2011.
