Early Jump Sparks Minutewomen Over No. 25 Northeastern, 2-0

October 04, 2019 | Field Hockey

Beech logs game-winner, van Tonder records second clean sheet of season

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey used an early goal from freshman Jess Beech just 34 seconds into the match and the Minutewomen hung on to the lead for the remainder of the day, as the squad defeated No. 25 nationally-ranked Northeastern, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. It is the first time UMass knocked off a ranked opponent since Sept. 10, 2017.

UMass improves to 4-6 with the win, while the Huskies fall to 4-6 on the year.

Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder earned her second shutout of the season with three saves and NU's Julia Gluyas had seven stops. Van Tonder now has amassed eight shutouts in her collegiate career.

Beech broke the scoreless tie just 34 seconds into the game with her third goal of the season. After a battle for the ball on the baseline, Northeastern looked to clear its defensive circle before Beech caused a turnover on the left side, quickly turned and fired just inside the right post.

From there the Minutewomen continued to threaten in the attacking third and drew three penalty corners in the first quarter. In the second stanza Northeastern put together multiple chances, but van Tonder was solid between the posts and kept the Huskies off the board en route to the clean sheet.

Beech helped spark an insurance tally in the final minute of regulation, firing a shot on Gluyas from the right side. Junior Lucy Cooper was right in front of Gluyas to clean up the rebound and put away her third goal of the season to cap the victory.

It was the Huskies that had an 8-4 edge in penalty corners, including four in the fourth quarter, while UMass had nine shots on goal to three for NU.

Massachusetts now prepares for a quick turnaround and faces New Hampshire at noon on Sun., Oct. 6. It'll be Youth Day at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex as fans eighth grade and younger will be invited on the field for starting lineups and a postgame autograph session will be held.
