Ang and McTear provide goals for Massachusetts; Richards provides five stops
DEDHAM, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey used two second half goals in less than four minutes to pull past Northeastern, 2-1, on Friday at Dedham Field. The Minutewomen level their record at 1-1 with the triumph, while Northeastern drops to 0-1.
Georgie McTear provided the eventual game-winning goal via a penalty stroke in the 44th minute, and Josephine Ang provided the difference maker early in the fourth quarter. It was Ang's first collegiate tally.
Goalkeeper Brooke Richards made five saves, including denying a penalty stroke attempt for the second consecutive game. At the other end Erin Savage recorded six stops as the Minutewomen dominated the circle with a 20-8 advantage in shots, including an 8-6 edge in attempts on goal.
Northeastern's Lauren Rowe halved the Huskies' deficit in the 52nd minute, but a lockdown defensive effort from UMass down the stretch, coupled with another Richards save, preserved the outcome for the Maroon and White.
The Minutewomen held a 8-1 margin in penalty corners.
Massachusetts opens its home schedule with a 2 p.m. matchup vs. Vermont on Sun., March 7 at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
